San Antonio is being shaken up once again this year, not least in part thanks to the arrival of a serious club night in Faction and Magna Carta. These two house heavyweights have come together before now to great effect with a residency at Sankeys Ibiza and now have a whole season of events lined up for 2017. Last year, Faction went it alone at Eden, but this year they call upon Magna Carta to take over the same club, and right from the off they do so with a bang.
After lots of buzz in the build up, the night finally came when things were to kick off, and boy did they: Demarzo was the DJ and producer stepping up to the decks when we arrived. Coming out of the blocks in strong fashion, he served up a Latin-flecked series of tech huose tunes that more than got my attention. Congas and drums flailed over rubbery beats and the crowd more than lapped it up; some clearly first-timers here, others wide-eyed veterans ready to go hard.
As the grooves from Demarzo kept on coming, the stylistic tinges changed, and ranged from deep to more driving. The club itself was bathed in blue light, with great visuals and a steamy atmosphere the order of the night. After him comes UK star Burnski, the man behind the Constant Sound label and a solid recent album.
His grooves are more dubby and stripped back, with real underground values and a serious groove underpinning it all. As he works the mixer hard, the crowd lap up his every mix and cheer at the breakdowns then jump at the drops. It’s a subtle and no-frills approach but one that really wins the crowd over and sums up the MO of this night. As Eden bounces late into the next day, and with the likes of Leftwing & Kody, Jozef K, Dale Howard, Javi Bora and more all to come later in the season, this is sure to be one of the parties of the year.
