What qualities do you look for in an Anjunadeep artist?
There’s no checklist or formula for an Anjunadeep artist, we sign each act on a case-by-case basis, but I suppose a few things we always look out for are an inventive and interesting approach to melody, unique and original elements to their sound, and for their music to be just as listenable at home as it is on the dancefloor.
Describe 3 seminal moments in Anjunadeep’s existence.
I think ‘Shadow’s Movement’ by Michael Cassette was a key moment, because it was not only an amazing track, but it was musically quite far from what we’d been doing previously. The track, and consequently the label, started getting support from some really influential DJs like James Zabiela and Laurent Garnier which then really broadened our horizons as a label.
Dusky’s debut album ‘Stick By This’ – I think Dusky are an act that really helped raise the profile of Anjunadeep, and their first album really is a classic, in our opinion, and is still in all our Spotify playlists and car stereos to this day.
Anjunadeep 07, this years installation of our yearly compilation series is another seminal moment for me. I think its the first in the series where we properly nailed it, in terms of both track selection, the running order, and the whole journey across both mixes. Previously there’s always been some element of compromise involved in putting together the label compilations, because you’re limited by the number of tracks you have, trying to get them working in the right order, but this time for whatever reason it felt like everything fell into place, and its the one in the series I’m most proud of.
Most disappointing moment in Anjunadeep’s existence?
Luckily there haven’t been many. Perhaps there are a couple of artists that we’d have like to have worked with who we haven’t been able to, but on the whole we haven’t had many disappointments.
Describe Anjunadeeps album artwork?
We work with a brilliant agency called Big Active who create all of our album sleeves. The main direction of the album covers is driven by the individual artists, but we then look to keep a certain feel so that each new cover fits with the rest of the catalogue.
Best Anjunadeep showcase
There have been some amazing label parties recently in London, Australia and North America, but my favourite has to be our day party in Miami earlier this year during WMC. It’s everything I’d like Anjunadeep parties to be, we had an amazing turnout and it felt more like a social than a club night, the sun was out, there was a barbecue going in the background. Each DJ played a brilliant set, and whilst the music is of course central, it’s the people there that really make it special.
Worst Anjunadeep showcase
Again we’ve been lucky to have avoided any major disasters, they’ve all been good fun, so far!
Dream Anjunadeep artist
Whilst their current output isn’t necessarily in line with what we’re doing on Anjunadeep, Eric Prydz and Maceo Plex are two phenomenal artists who we’d love to work with.
Most important software
Has to be Spotify, it’s what we all listen to music on, and it’s been a huge platform for us to find new fans over the past couple of years.
Longest day ever worked
The longest day I’ve ever worked was when Above & Beyond performed at EDC Las Vegas earlier this year, and Bryan Cranston aka Walter White appeared on stage with them. We ended up fielding press enquiries for nearly 24 hours afterwards, which was pretty exhausting but also exhilarating and good fun
We have Cubicolor’s debut album coming next year, which we’re all super excited about, they are set for a breakthrough year. Croquet Club has a mini-album called ‘Love Exposure’ coming soon which is sounding like one of my favourite things we’ve ever released. And we’re already thinking about ‘Anjunadeep 08’, because we’re a bit intimidated about the prospects of making it as good as Anjunadeep 07!
