Premiere + Interview: Oliver Schories – Artik (Original Mix)
What started as 2012s one-to-watch artists and a new favorite for clubbers who like their techno grooves organic and melodic, Oliver Schories represents the latest wave of promising producers.
The Hamburg man is well known for his quality house and stripped back minimal sounds. He plays at some of the best clubs in Europe and has released on Parquet, Steyoyoke, Darkroom Dubs, his own label SOSO and many more
Today, Oliver delivers ‘Artik’ off the Chapter 24 Records release of the same name. The track is a broody cut with dark bass underpinning an arching groove. Subtle synth patterns flesh it out and spooky vocals really add an air of intrigue.
“Artik” is available 26 August on Chapter 24 Records

Speaking about your upcoming ‘Artik’ EP, what was the starting point for what would ultimately become the final track?
I made the track already last year in June, so it’s hard to say as I honestly can’t really recall it. It was a time I moved to into a new studio place with new equipment and I made a lot of tracks, or let’s be honest: a lot of sketches. I didn’t finish off a large number. This was probably one out of four from that time.
The EP comes out by way of Chapter 24 Records. Can you explain a little about how that came to be? Why is Chapter 24 right for this release?
I was and am really impressed about the label’s style and their quality releases. When I got into contact with them I also found out they really care about every single release being successful, doing a lot on promotion and selecting the tracks wisely. I just sent this one to them as I thought it would match their label style. And…big surprise: they signed it straight away :).
Also, the EP features remixes from the likes of Atapy, Marc DePulse, and Third Son. Why these particular artists?
The label guys selected Third Son and Atapy (which I am very very happy with) and I brought the Marc DePulse remix over from my side. I think overall this represents a wide spectrum throughout different styles which in my opinion is critical for an EP, which basically revolves around one original track. You simply don’t want all the remixes to be alike. I am very happy with the results.
Why did you include the Edgar Allen Poe quote (‘On the morrow he will leave me, as my hopes have flown before. Then the bird said, “Nevermore.”‘) in the EP’s press release?
This was actually the idea of the label, as Chapter 24 revolves around the concept of storytelling through music. Artik translates as ‘no longer’ or ‘no more’, so the guys decided to borrow this quote from Edgar Allen Poe’s famous poem ‘The Raven’.
How is your hometown of Hamburg for nightlife these days? Where would you say it sits in its nightclubbing history?
At a peak or has it seen better days? I think a lot of things have happened in Hamburg over the last years. In the early 2000’s there were very limited events, while in Berlin, which is just a 1.5 hour train ride away, it was going on in full swing. Over time more and more clubs and organisations emerged, like ‘Ego’ (the club run by Solomun), Baalsaal, Uebel & Gefaehrlich and so on. Today we have a vital clubbing scene with still some “real” underground spots and a number of “ok-places“ :) In the end it’s hard to judge for me as I am not that often in the city to experience club nights but judging from the events I am playing I’d say we’re at the same peak level like other German cities such as Cologne or Munich.
What would you say is your “go to” piece of production equipment?
That’s pretty easy to answer: The Dave Smith Instruments Prophet 6 :)
What are you looking forward to throughout the rest of the summer? Do you have any holiday plans?
There are some more Festivals up to come, such as SonneMondSterne and Echelon, then in the last week of August and the first week of September I’ll take a break. For the first time in my new camping van. Let’s see where the journey goes :)
