Mix #105 by Baikal
The name Baikal comes from the words ‘Bai Kyul’, which translates as ‘rich lake’. This corresponds with the music that this Dutch, Berlin-based artist is known for. It can be best described as multi-layered electronic music for the heart, mind and feet. Hopefully all at the same time.
Baikal is mainly known for the various outstanding remixes he’s done for guys like Ian Pooley of Innervisions or Isolee for Tamed Musiq. After having made a string of very prolific remixes in the last 1,5 years, Baikal is now in the process of finishing his latest remix for a small English label. More info on that soon..
But his musical mindset is best portrayed on his original release for Maeve (a collaboration between Mano Le Tough and The Drifer). And with enough studio experience in his bag and having matured behind the decks – with gigs across the hotspots in Europe, USA and the UK – Baikal is finally ready to deploy all his time and effort on more original productions. His philosophy in the studio can be heard back in his mix as well: the music itself, the abstract experience and the emotions it provokes should tell enough of a story to entertain you as a listener, and the persona behind the artist is of lesser importance. And we like that, especially in this day and age of image-building and frenzied PR management. It’s all about the music, and with Baikal playing through the speakers you know you’re getting just that – good music. And it doesn’t matter that you probably don’t know what he looks like. Instead he would rather let you think that he’s a little monkey taking a selfie.
