Report: MDRNTY @ Gstaad 2016

A drive up the Swiss mountains, through the curvy roads between the vineyards, watching happy cows feeding on the lush grass, breathing crispy autumn air makes you wonder how the calmness of nature will go along with the hectic techno beats. However, the MDRNTY festival, this time held in the Swiss mountain village of Gstaad is successfully testing it for the second time.

The excitement builds as clubbers board the cable-cars and the vibration of bass is felt stronger with each meter gained towards the 1550 m high destination. Modernity Events team stays true to their Swiss manner in choosing spectacular mountain venues throughout their events. The day party stage is surrounded by a spectacular 360° view of the Bernese Alps, which, glowing in sunshine, are creating a special and refreshing setting, particularly contrary to the dark sweaty dance floors.

The line-up of the festival set high expectations, combining international stars such as Seth Troxler, Loco Dice, Adriatique, Guy Gerber, Damian Lazarus, Alex Niggemann with local Swiss talents. The music kicked off Saturday at noon with a Zurich’s very own James MC Hale, followed by Alex Niggemann. His particularly crowd intuitive set gently guided his audience through subgenres of melancholic deep house to darker techno. The local heroes Adrian and Adrian of Adriatique took over and had to prolongue their set due to the last minute cancellation from Damian Lazarus. Much anticipated techno wizard was advised by his doctor to cancel the gigs due to the crazy eye infection, thus Adriatique, DJ Tennis and Guy Gerber collaborated to save the day, which was a major last minute change preparation wise. Luckily these guys aren’t playing around and the experience in delivering solid lengthy sets was absolutely evident.

As the sun dipped behind the mountain peaks DJ Tennis and Guy Gerber led the crowd into the darkness, a perfect choice of the hour. The light show turned the glass box from panoramic to a mystic club in the sky, and the first day ended with the hands high up dancing to the intoxicating sounds of Maceo Plex. As usual the audience united in cheer to his classic ‘Solitary Daze’.

Sunday morning DJ Blazer set the tone of the day along with Guti, the only one playing a live set. Their set successfully set the tone for the headliner Seth Troxler. Weaving in the fresh ‘Playing Daze’ by South Beach Recycling got the crowd jacking and by the time he dropped Groove Armada’s new beauty of 2016 ‘U Can’, he got the crowd in his pocket. After his solo set, it was an awesome surprise to see Loco Dice joining Seth for the second half of the afternoon for a full 4 hour back to back set and turning the heat of the party to its highest. The warm Sunday sun raised the energy levels through the roof and when the guys put up  ‘Loosen your Collar’ by The Narcoleptic, the room lost their minds.

As in every ending, all found that blissful silence every nighthawk knows so well. However, it was going down the mountain to the sleepy valley and leaving the memories of the invigorating dance to the repository heights of the Alps, what made this event so very special.
