Review:

Probably the most challenging thing to do as a producer is to release your first album. Being as young as the 22-year old David August doesn’t make things easier at all. And even though David isn’t new to electronic music, and has been DJ’ing for over 7 years already, it still is remarkable how mature his sound is. When listening to his debut-album makes you wonder if this guy has ever been young at all, as it could easily be an album made by a battered war-veteran. Maybe that’s why the title ‘’Times’’ is so well-chosen: these tracks somehow feel really old, and it makes you wonder how this music sounds on a cracklin’ 12’’ record in late summer (let’s say August?).

‘’Times’’ has the word melancholy written all over it and it is very clear that David has decided to settle with the emotional electronic sound he already managed to create in tracks such as his appraised remix of ‘’With You’’ by the Flight Facilities.

It already starts with the opening track ‘’Help Me Through’’. With it’s super slow count of 87 beats per minute and soothing synthesizer it could very well be the soundtrack of some sort of post-apocalyptic movie. An eerie kind of feeling you’ll get with most of the tracks. So as an intro track, it sets the tone perfectly. Later on in the album, David uses the clarinet a lot which creates another setting. I wouldn’t mind putting on the Godfather movies in the background whilst listening to some of the tracks on this album.

The album in all is super slow, don’t expect to find any dancefloor-killers on this one. An interesting choice; usually producers tend to have one or two killer tracks on which they build around their entire album. And especially from a release on Diynamic you would expect that at least two to four tracks would be suitable for dancing. But David clearly strays from this concept, which is both remarkable and admirable at the same time. ‘’Blossom’’ is perhaps the most suitable for playing on stage, and also happens to be my favorite track from the album. It’s well balanced and has this typical piano David in my eyes is so famous for. It sounds very authentic to me, and to pack such a classic sound in electronic music is very impressive.

It’s hard to define a track from another artist that get’s close to the strange feeling this album gives me. But if I had to pick, a track that comes to mind is ‘’Keep Me There’’ by Nicolas Jaar.

That should give you an impression of the sound David’s established with his album. And if there’s anyone amongst you that played Zelda: Ocarina Of Time on the Nintendo 64 when you were young: play that tune from the potion shop again before putting on ‘’Hommage’’ or ‘’Watch Your Step’’. To top it off, ‘’Forgive Me If I Bleed’’ gives you the ultimate emotional ride. It grabs you from the very first second and doesn’t let go until the last, making this a top notch debut.

In all, I can only conclude that ‘’Times’’ has soul. It is extremely well-produced and well-balanced with a clear, dark, sometimes even sad tone to it. To pack so much emotion in a debut-album is simply amazing, even for an established producer like David August.
