When first listening to the original version of ‘Reverse Skydiving’, I immediately had to think of ‘Electricity’ by Lee Foss and MK, and with good reason.

Hot Natured partly consists of Lee Foss, and one cannot deny that the elements of these tracks have a lot in common. In this case that’s a pity, because the original track on this EP therefore doesn’t really stand out. It’s something I find enjoyable for having a drink with some friends at a bar, but nothing more.

Given the fact that the original doesn’t have much to talk about, it’s up to the remixes to offer a fresh look on things. First up is a man I greatly admire: Deetron tries to give the EP a different touch with his more rave-like approach. But whereas I really dig Deetron’s stuff, even I think, that because of Anabel’s vocal the track doesn’t get to another level. Instead, it creates an off-balanced track that has a pumping bassline with vocals that are too slow to support them. I’m very much hoping that a dub version of his remix will be released. I’d play that right away as I think that without the vocal, the track will rock. It’s not that I don’t like her voice, but this time it just doesn’t really match with Deetron’s touch. The same kind of goes with Shadow Child’s and Robert James’ remixes. The tracks are very well produced and will easily get the energy going, but it’s the vocal that actually lessens the energy provided. I wonder if they were forced to include her vocal fully in their tracks, as it seems as something unnatural to their productions.

In short it’s the voice of Anabel that – to me – bring the remixes out of balance. A real shame, because without it some of these tracks would easily make it to my record bag. Of course liking her voice is partly a matter of taste (as is music) but the ‘Reverse Skydiving’ EP in any case proves to me once more that vocals are a musical element that is to be used with caution, and that forcing the use of them brings along a certain risk of losing the energy instead of pushing it higher. My advice for Hot Natured is to definitely release dub versions because the remixes have enough in store to make venues go mad!
