Berlin is the place to be for both creators and lovers of electronic music. Amongst those creators we find Dinky, who now releases her fifth studio album on Berlin-based label Visionquest. For me reviewing this album meant getting in touch with the mind of what I now regard as one of Berlin's many promising producers.

A new Solomun. With Mladen being the headmaster of the star-team that is called Diynamic, it is only logical that every move this man makes is looked at with extra care. And so having to review his new ''Yesnomaybe'' EP, the 65th release on the label, was going to be a challenge. Because a logical consequence of Diynamic's becoming so big as a platform would be that music released there would be increasingly commercial and perhaps even cheap. Furthermore, looking at the course this Hamburg-based label has set out, it seemed to me that this release would have indie/disco-house written all over it. Both features don't particularly appeal to me, so I was really curious what this Bosnian-born German would come up with.
MANIK and Burnski, two names that (should) ring bells with deephouse enthusiasts all over the world. These two producers are pioneers of the new deep house sound. With an unmistakeable feel for groove they have delivered another masterpiece with ''Yellow Jacket Girl'', shortened to ''YJG''. It is MANIK's fourth release already on Culprit LA, making him a true resident producer for the prestigious LA-based label. And even though Burnski never released anything of his own on Culprit, his appraised remix of Subb-An's ''What I Do'' lifted moods to higher levels all summer and his previous collaborations with MANIK pretty much made him a part of the Culprit gang already.
There are several possible explanations for the fact that deephouse is so hot right now. Purists will tell you that deephouse has always been popular, but even they can't deny that in the last few years another kind of pop-infused deephouse has gained loads of territory making it one of the most popular electronic music genres around.
I doubt if there are many more UK house producers that understand the current needs of house lovers more than EJECA. Being at the top of his game, his ''Life In Flux'' EP is another one of his masterpieces. Starting of on the A side with the adequately named ''Jump'' party starter, EJECA makes it clear that energizing the dancefloor is one of his key features. But where most would suspect the other tracks to be of the same level, EJECA surprises with his other three tracks which have surprisingly calm vibe. First off there's ''Purnsley'' (a word I looked up by the way, but found to have no distinct meaning). There's really just one description for it: sexy. The wavy pad synthesizer, groovy bassline and soothing female vocal make this a great track for warming up whatever crowd you encounter.
Listening to ''Old Toy'' makes it clear that house is here to stay. The original is packed with energy and grooves like hell. The female chopped-up vocal might be considered a bit cheesy, but you can't deny it's catchiness. The original track clearly reaches to what I like to call a Hed-Kandi kind of sound: smooth, groovy, warm vocalistic music with a distinct sexy edge to it. The remix by Stefano Ritteri takes the vocal-chopping even further, creating a long and steady buildup kind of track which actually doesn't release at all.
When thinking about electronic music from Germany, one would not immediately point in the direction garage house. Yet it is this very UK sound that Rhode & Brown try to master in their productions. Powerful uptempo house with a clear flashback to the good old days in which garage was born. Old days I can't tell you much about since I was still walking around in diapers, but when listening to Rhode & Brown's ''Joyride'' EP, you'll probably understand what I mean - even if you're aged under 25.
The Canadian Amirali, part of the Crosstown Rebels crew, has managed to pull it off once more. 'Melancholia' is packed with the melodic deep and dark elegance sound this London-based producer has made himself known for with tracks such as 'Beautiful World' and 'Falling Down'. The name is chosen well, as the original track has an eerie, sad feeling over it. And even though one can argue about whether 'Melancholia' stands out in comparison to Amirali's previous club hits, it is clear that this track is destined to be played in underground venues all across the globe.
