Party Report: Strange Sounds From Beyond 2017

Strange Sounds From Beyond Festival 2017, an effervescent event and Amsterdam Noord’s industrial NDSM, that attracted plenty of young and colourful audience and offered many entertaining choices. From the abundance, Sun Ra Arkestra was at the epicentre of all expectations. The Arkestra under the leadership of Marshall Allen, performed fully drawn into the immediacy of music. Space is the place, left the weight on it this time in a mid capricious Amsterdam summer. They creative and funky musicians connected to the public naturally and seemed to have enjoyed the crowd. Party Report: Lente Kabinet 2017

Amsterdam’s Lente Kabinet festival is the annual little sister to it’s renowned Dekmantel event. Organized by the same minds, and frequently featuring similar artists (albeit at less than 1/3 of the latter’s multi-day, city-wide offering), Lente Kabinet is something of a precursor to the massive summer events to come (I mean, the English translation has “Spring” in it…but most of you knew already that already), as well as a (welcome) relief from the barrage of open format, mainstream festival events which tend to monopolize and create a complacency toward all those arbitrary definitions of “underground” out there. My own experience ... Read more

When The Strange Sounds From Beyond Take Over…

June 26 saw the Strange Sounds From Beyond emitted via three stages in Amsterdam’s Noordlicht. The likes of Young Marco, Gilles Peterson, Omar Souleyman, Antal, Ata Kak, and more brought intelligent dance music of all descriptions on a day the dance music establishment (Awakenings) otherwise would have monopolized. Instead, some 3,000 (or so) of the city’s most eclectic party animals danced the day away to the sounds of Syria, Africa, Greece, USA, and way more in a veritable orgy of world sounds. A New Amsterdam Festival Exploring Strange Sounds From Beyond

Underground dance music fans in Amsterdam cannot complain when it comes to both, the amount and the quality, of local festivals. Starting with DGTL in spring, almost every following summer weekend, Amsterdam hosts the world’s top underground dance music acts (including world class local artists), presented via a flawless dutch organisational efforts of Dekmantel, Awakenings, Straf Werk, Pleinvrees, Pitch and so on. However, over the course of Amsterdam’s festival season, a lack of the unexpected musical journey, a fuller diversity of electronic sound can nevertheless be felt.  Don’t get me wrong, there is no denial that these festivals always deliver a top notch standard in every aspect – both party and ... Guy Sells His Turntables After Seeing Antal Play At De School

Now that’s what we call being brutally honest with yourself. A seller on Marktplaats, Holland’s Craigslist, has put his two Technics SL1210 MK2’s up for sale, and for a very specific reason. Not the usual “I don’t have time to play them anymore” or “I’m only playing CDJ’s now” were decisive in his choice to sell, but rather seeing Antal, Rush Hour record store co-founder and local DJ veteran, play his all-nighter at De School last weekend.
