Large Scale Trials of MDMA Approved for Medical Treatment

That MDMA is not just a party drug we knew all along. But this week held a huge victory for those fighting for legalisation of drugs like MDMA, LSD and marijuana for the medical use. After a set of successful preliminary trial treatments, the DFA (Food and Drug Administration) is moving forward with a large scale study for using Ecstasy as prescription drug to cure post-traumatic stress disorder. Furthermore if the results are favorable, MDMA would be available to medical patients as early as 2021. The first six initial studies were treating 130 PTSD patients with MDMA, among whom – veterans, victims of sexual assault, police officers and firefighters. Patients on avergage ... Read more

Well, it’s that time of year again: time for the annual European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction report on the drug habits of the continent. Though dense, the highlight of the report is surely the dramatic surge of ecstasy use, especially amongst people ages 15 – 34. In that demographic, some 2.1 million people have admitted to using the drug over the course of the past year, up by 300K from the year before. Batch Of 100 ‘Minion XTC Pills’ Seized By Chilean Police

Chilean customs authorities have intercepted at least 100 xtc tablets shaped like Minions that were creatively – and quite ironically – hidden in a children’s drawing kit. The pills have been produced in the Netherlands, after which the batch had made its way to the Chilean town of Vina del Mar. Metro reports that two men, one Chilean and one Argentine, were pointed to as the owners by local authorities and have been put under house arrest for now. The Minion character was first introduced in the Despicable Me cartoon films, after which the adorable yellow subordinates of the movies’ returning antagonist got ... Read more

Ecstasy As Post Modern Pop Art

Graffiti artist Dean Zeus Coleman aka “Zeus” has grabbed hold of the artistic qualities of ecstasy  and created huge, stylised plaster versions of actual pills for a series called ‘Love is a Drug’. The sleekly designed tablets have a somewhat obvious pop art potential, made even more striking by their unapologetic blackmarket branding throughout the years. Pills have come in all shapes and colours, while sporting logos ranging from car companies to cartoon characters. Some may even describe it as the world’s first postmodern drug: a branded high, where the better the effect, the higher the “brand” recognition. So, with that in mind, check ... Read more

The Amsterdam Ecstasy Shop Is Now Open

As we reported over the weekend, a pop up “ecstasy” shop opened in Amsterdam today, which was organised by the youth wing of the Young Democrats political party, D66. As promised, the event was largely about awareness with no actual MDMA products sold. Rather, placebo pills of various colours, “effects,” and prices were on the menu as fundraising for the organisation. “We want to regulate and legalise MDMA.  At this moment, half a million people in the Netherlands use ecstasy and it is all underground“, said Young Democrats International Officer Milan Asseis. “We don’t want to look the other way and ... A Hard Pill to Swallow: “The Agony of Ecstasy”

Adding to the debate on drugs that seems so often to revolve around dance culture, the Australian broadcaster ABC2 has released a new documentary: The Agony of Ecstasy. Named after Irving Stone’s postmodern 1961 biography of Michelangelo, the film tracks Lise, a 28-year old former raver, as she explores the impacts of two years of weekly ecstasy use. Pondering her current battles with mental illness, it gives voice to a human dilemma rarely heard over the fear mongering and denialism that so often dominates the debate on drugs. Beyond that, it explores an important issue that deserves further attention. We ... Read more
