Festival Report: Loveland

By: Peter Dingemanse & Berend Pilon Pictures: Hédi Ouali To this day the festival crowd at Loveland remains one of The Netherlands’ most diverse. There doesn’t seem to be a specific age or social group that dominates. From guys sporting football jerseys to die-hard ravers and hipsters, everyone seems to be here, whether they are 20 or 50 – a decent representation of society. Curious to see what had changed this year, we set out to explore the terrain. The lay-out is pretty much the same as last year, but we soon run into our first surprise. The new Rise stage ... Festival Report: Dekmantel

Friday & Saturday by Steve Rickinson Sunday by Soren Schmidt Over the past weekend, it was time once again for one of the continent’s finest underground House and Techno festivals, Dekmantel. In its third year, the intimate festival held at the beautiful Amsterdamse Bos, did not disappoint with an absolutely stacked lineup of some of our favourite artists from across the globe. At first glance, the lineup featuring the likes of Four Tet, Jeff Mills, Dixon, Ricardo Villalobos & Zip, Robert Hood, Jackmaster, Tale of Us, and the rest of the who’s who of underground beats, was salivating, rightfully selling out its ... Study: Festival Wristbands Are Bacterial Infestation, Could Cause Infections

It’s a familiar sight during Summer and long afterwards: people still proudly wearing their festival wristbands, to show the world just how incredible the last few months have been for them or as an icebreaker at parties and in everyday life. It can sometimes go as far as not being able to see somebody’s underarm anymore because it’s covered in proof of five summers worth of festival visits. This was all well and good – to each his own – but now a study from the University of Surrey has found out that festival wrist bands are a bacterial infestation ... Read more

Report: Pitch Festival 2015

Last weekend saw the fifth edition of Amsterdam’s beloved Pitch Festival. Held at Westergasfabriek, the festival, known for the best and newest crossover acts and DJ’s, delivered what was promised. As Saturday, 4 July was one of the hottest days we have had in Western Europe the past few years, we tried not to burn ourselves out too early, arriving around 4 pm. After a long warm up from Woody, an unsung hero of the Berlin underground, moving the crowd at the sunny Kaap stage, I though it was high time to check out the rest of the event. The whole design at Pitch is always outstanding and aesthetically ... U.S. Communities On The Rise To Promote ‘Sober Raving’ At Festivals

While the amount of festivals worldwide is continuing to grow rapidly there is still a serious PR problem surrounding the image of these events, especially concerning dance music-related ones. Festivals as drug-fueled, bacchanalian frenzies are an all too familiar message being spread by misinformed mainstream media, pundits and parents. Especially after the wave of drug deaths in the United States and other parts of the world (including Amsterdam). In the US there are now various communities gaining in popularity that might just have the perfect answer to the public’s false generalizations of festivals and dance music culture. What these so-called ... Read more

United Nations Acknowledges Dance Music As Positive Global Force

We all know that the global dance music scene is exactly that, global.  With this interconnectivity, issues of diversity, acceptance, and change have become pillars of its mantra.  Despite this however, there has been little acknowledgement in the power of dance by societies “higher ups”…until now! Honouring Belgium’s massive Tomorrowland festival, United Nations Secretary General Bam Ki-Moon remarked on the true power of global dance music, as well as its positioning within a wider cultural dialogue; one meant for a world of togetherness (no pun intended) and universal acceptance. “…the Tomorrowland festival in general – symbolises some of the core values the ... DGTL Festival 2015 Report: Sunday

About a week ago DGTL kicked off the festival season and it was a blast. Enough time to retrospect on the two day event. Here’s day two of the festival report. The easter sunday started with quite a long train ride for me. I spent the weekend in Germany, got into the train to Amsterdam, put on my headphones to get into the mood and tried to rest before kicking of the festival season. After a strange train ride, a fight between a ticket controller and passenger included, I finally arrived in Amsterdam. First good sign: the sun is shining, which ... Read more
