Dekmantel Festival 2018: The Crown Jewel Of Amsterdam’s Festival Landscape

It’s been nearly a week since Dekmantel Festival 2018, the renowned and beloved jewel of Amsterdam’s robust festival landscape, swept into town. From the I’J River to Radion and, of course, its home base of Amsterdamse Bos, the now six-year-old festival continued to reinforce its place as a bonafide leader in atmosphere, curation, and risk. For the past couple of years, the three-day festival has gradually expanded into something of a mini-conference, where its events are supplemented with (a slew of) afterparties, concerts, radio appearances, interviews, and panels. This year, beginning on Wednesday with its Muziekgebouw opening concert featuring a ... Read more

Born in Italy, Elena Colombi has since relocated to London, setting up a successful series of events since 2008 that have made her a staple name of its underground. Lente Kabinet 2018: The Maturing, But Ever So Rebellious Little Sister

It’s 11:30 in the morning on a Saturday as we quickly finish our coffee and hop on the bike to set out for one of the best festivals this season. We set a course due North, away from the sprawling capital of modern dance music, into its hinterlands. As houses become fewer and further in between, the landscape becomes greener as we paddle our way over an ever-increasing number of dikes and bridges; a sign indicating we’ve now officially left Amsterdam is overshadowed by a much smaller, bright red & yellow sign below it, pointing us where we need to ... Lente Kabinet: A Lesson In Experimentation

Experimentation is one of those fickle beasts within any creative scene. With subjective meanings juxtaposed against industry standards, as well as the ever-present search for acceptance and “cool”, it is an approach to creation that frequently gets lost in an interconnected system of artistry and promo. Many an artist (and brand) have found themselves on the cusp of experimentation, only to yield to the financial pressures of sponsorship, branding, and template, ultimately killing any artistic approach that once allowed for the very platform off which they once thrived. Mostly a result of financial stability, and the sirens call of corporate ... Read more

With his Apron Records imprint instrumental in introducing the likes of Greg Beato and Shanti Celeste to the world, and inimitable technical skills behind the decks, Steve Julien is a complete (and unique) voice in contemporary dance. Party Report: Lente Kabinet 2017

Amsterdam’s Lente Kabinet festival is the annual little sister to it’s renowned Dekmantel event. Organized by the same minds, and frequently featuring similar artists (albeit at less than 1/3 of the latter’s multi-day, city-wide offering), Lente Kabinet is something of a precursor to the massive summer events to come (I mean, the English translation has “Spring” in it…but most of you knew already that already), as well as a (welcome) relief from the barrage of open format, mainstream festival events which tend to monopolize and create a complacency toward all those arbitrary definitions of “underground” out there. My own experience ... Read more
