An Interactive World Map According To Musical Tastes

Spotify has unveiled a comprehensive, interactive world map breaking down musical tastes among a wide selection of geographic locations, big and small. When users click on a certain area of interest, Spotify will direct you to its respective playlist. The maps selection process is determined by what Spotify categorises as distinctive: “What do we mean by ‘distinctive?’ This is music that people in each city listen to quite a bit, which people in other cities also do not listen to very much. So it is, exactly, the music that makes them different from people everywhere else.“ Each playlist is updated twice per month, with ... Read more

Tom Trago Talks New Booking Agency ‘Voyage Select’, DGTL & Future Plans

“It looks like there is a growing interest in quality house music in the places that you wouldn’t immediately associate with dance music. It seems like the crowds in these smaller cities are much more receptive of the sound I want to bring across” It recently came to light that the forward-looking house imprint by Tom Trago, Voyage Direct, would be sidestepping into the artist booking business by opening up their own agency in collaboration with Jorn Liefdeshuis. Eager to hear more about the news, we met up with Tom on a sunny afternoon last week to talk about the ... Read more

This Is What Trouw Looks Like Now

What a nightmare it must be to work across the street from Trouw, which at the moment is being leveled bit by bit by heavy machinery and construction workers. Tom Trago, whose studio lays opposite of the club in the Volkshotel building, has documented the demolition of the hailed Amsterdam club in a small series of pictures and videos. The venue will be replaced by the Student Hotel in 2016. Last week the organization made it clear that they would be interested in re-opening Trouw’s basement to re-institute a club there. Various parties from Amsterdam’s nightlife showed their interest after ... Read more

Dekmantel Festival 2014 – Report

After a long build-up and red hot anticipation, both national as international, last weekend it was finally time for Dekmantel Festival 2014. What we saw and heard over the two days we were there, Friday & Sunday, was pretty much as good as it gets in the Netherlands, and it definitely showed that the organization has gone through lengths to not only correct the mistakes of last year, but to also improve on a lot of fronts. The result was a three-day musical paradise with international allure. In the months prior to the festival it became clear that Dekmantel wasn’t ... Read more

Valhalla Festival 2013 Report

Prior to the festivities you all are so familiar with, in the South of Amsterdam in a place called RAI, the organizers of Valhalla revealed a festival that was beyond any expectation. Its proportions were felt immediately as a cordon of people was taking the direction to VALHALLA. Since last year, Amsterdam & its party folk won’t be awaiting the magic of Christmas. Instead they will all look forward to the dreamlike festival where Holland greets selected artists from the electronic music industry in a two-way street. For those who do not know, Valhalla is a circus-like festival of great ... Read more

Follow The Path To Valhalla

Last year, around this time, Amsterdam was introduced to a new winter festival. It was one of BIG proportions, bringing together different crowds and styles of house and techno. They created a vibe that was larger than that of a good party; there was something more going on that night. There was a state of Valhalla. Next week, on Saturday December 21st, the organization is back for their second edition, ‘Valhalla, A Bizarre Ride’ which will again take place in the only venue that can handle the ambitions of an event like this: The Amsterdam RAI. The RAI will be turned ... Read more

A glimpse into Buiten Westen’s successful second edition

It’s difficult to try and capture the atmosphere of a music festival in words, especially as this is my first review of one. In all honesty I was relying on my backstage pass to enable me to win some information worthy of a good article and on my experience as a visitor from the previous year’s edition. So there I was, wide eyed, with notepad and all ready to experience this adult’s fairground called Buiten Westen. As I stepped on to the terrain, I noticed that the general mood was a positive one with hoards of mid-twenty something’s, scattered and ... Read more
