[Playlist] Orlando Voorn’s Favorite Artists Of The Dutch Underground

When it comes to house and techno in the Netherlands, few of those currently involved in the scene can match up with Orlando Voorn. A mainstay in Dutch electronic music since pretty much the very beginning, Voorn has left an inimitable mark on both his local scene and the global underground movement as a whole. A fierce proponent of top drawer beats, Voorn’s talent is indicative of the labels he’s repped in his time: from R&S to KMS to more contemporary outlets such as Rennie Foster’s RF (where he recently released the brilliant ‘Fix is Back’ EP), what this man ... The Gabber. or How Rotterdam Gave Birth to An Underground Style

Once, not long ago, existed a short-lived and favored underground music scene known as Gabber, it is pronounced rubber but with the Dutch’s signature throat scratching ‘G’ gulping the ‘R.’ They lived the moment, danced till the sunrise, had no care about shower and limits on drug induced highs. Despite their flat out retarded dance routines and beats reaching nonsensical 220 BPMs, making your head explode, it leaves me with a melancholic impression of an young-lived trend, which somehow, started living again. What Is The Underground?

Describing music as “underground” can mean a whole bunch of different things dependent on the context. Often in music circles it can be a stamp of approval, pointing to the fact that, whatever sound it is, comes from a genuine place of creativity not tainted by commercialism. On the flip side, in more commercially minded circles the “underground” label can point to something half-arsed and ill-conceived, unable to communicate with humanity at large. So what is the true definition of underground? Can it be pinned down at all in an age where everything is available at the click of a ... Read more

Underground Community Reacts on US Elections

The underground dance music community has something to say about the outcome of the US Elections and believe us, it’s not going to be nice. What a night, what an outcome! Even if the full results are not out yet, the mouth is choking to say that name next to the “The Next President of the United States”. So while the world is in a shock awe, just like after Brexit, all we are left with is to speculate, whether Trump victory brings the end to the American hegemony, would bring politics back to the basics, as the modern thinker and ... Swiss Architects Design Inflatable Nightclub For Your Next After, After, After Party

No, it’s not some androgynous new sex toy. What you’re seeing above is actually an inflatable club space fro Swiss architects Bureau A. Designed to house the annual Federation of Swiss Architects party (surely a MUST attend event), the structure named “Shelter,” features a bar, dance floor, DJ booth, and furniture, all built out of PVC. This makes the “club” inflatable and, thus, highly portable too. On the space, Bureau A described it’s design in the most pretentiously architectural way possible with, “For one night, the black hole of a neat and well-organised society is revealed as a potential for ... House veteran DJ Pierre is getting into the club ownership game, launching WildPitch in Atlanta, Georgia. Announced via a slew of Instagram content, some of which you can see below, Pierre describes the venue as the “the only true underground venue for house and techno in Atlanta,” going on to say that, “egos are left at the door and positive vibes reign”. For those wondering, the venue already features many trademarks of DJ Pierre’s career, including its name, which was the name of the movement Pierre created whilst moving to the East Coast. Also, his Afro Acid concept will play ... Read more

Enter The Colourful World Of The (Pre-EDM) USA Underground

Recently available in the UK, though being published in the US in 2014, ‘Dancefloor Thunderstorm: Land Of The Free, Home Of The Rave’, takes a look at the American underground dance scene, pre-EDM invasion. By looking at the rave movements in the 1990s and early 200s, the picture of a scene steeped in the underground, stuffed animals, candy bracelets, and UFO pants galore. DJs like Christopher Lawrence, Donald Glaude, and Richie Hawtin are seen (take it from me, as a child of the East Coast rave scene of the late 90s ALL these figures, including the likes of Josh Wink, ... Four Tet & Skrillex Went B2B Last Weekend And Apparently It Was A Rager

In one of the more unlikely live collaborations to come in recent memory, news of a Four Tet and Skrillex B2B set from the Eat Your Own Ears event at Camden Town’s intimate Underground (a heavy metal friendly venue whose recent bookings include “Ohio’s Blackened Heavy Metallers” SKELETONWITCH) made headlines in the wee hours of Easter’s morning after. Neither Four Tet nor Skrillex are any strangers to collaboration, with the former having played with everyone from Floating Points to Jamie xx (recently unleashing a mid-year candidate for Essential Mix of the Year), and the latter touring the world with Diplo as the ...
