Dekmantel Festival 2018: The Crown Jewel Of Amsterdam’s Festival Landscape

It’s been nearly a week since Dekmantel Festival 2018, the renowned and beloved jewel of Amsterdam’s robust festival landscape, swept into town. From the I’J River to Radion and, of course, its home base of Amsterdamse Bos, the now six-year-old festival continued to reinforce its place as a bonafide leader in atmosphere, curation, and risk. For the past couple of years, the three-day festival has gradually expanded into something of a mini-conference, where its events are supplemented with (a slew of) afterparties, concerts, radio appearances, interviews, and panels. This year, beginning on Wednesday with its Muziekgebouw opening concert featuring a ... Read more

Party Report: Oasis Festival 2017

Last weekend, one of the world’s most exotic cities – Marrakech, Morocco, hosted the third annual Oasis Festival. This 2017 edition, which featured as the event’s biggest to date, was a multi sensory barrage the likes of which few could have truly been ready for. For those unfamiliar, Marrakech is (one of) Morocco’s most important and historical cities. A fortified expanse that dates back (officially) to the 8th and 9th centuries, the city has acted as a seminal outpost for trade and culture since its inception. Upon arrival, one is immediately struck by the consistency of the architecture – red walls ... Read more

When The Strange Sounds From Beyond Take Over…

June 26 saw the Strange Sounds From Beyond emitted via three stages in Amsterdam’s Noordlicht. The likes of Young Marco, Gilles Peterson, Omar Souleyman, Antal, Ata Kak, and more brought intelligent dance music of all descriptions on a day the dance music establishment (Awakenings) otherwise would have monopolized. Instead, some 3,000 (or so) of the city’s most eclectic party animals danced the day away to the sounds of Syria, Africa, Greece, USA, and way more in a veritable orgy of world sounds. Summer is inching towards the halfway mark, with only a few weeks in the mix – it’s time to turn our begoggled eyes to late summer festival season. Its June. Thus far, you’ve probably had an alright summer – but the opportunities to be extraordinarily sinful whilst having copious amounts of ultraviolet rays absolutely burn your body are beginning to wane.  Most of the rave heads have probably made it a few festivals already,  but some of us working-life people are still looking to escape our tragic albinism. That’s why we set out what we think are the ten best festivals during the second half of summer ... Read more

A New Amsterdam Festival Exploring Strange Sounds From Beyond

Underground dance music fans in Amsterdam cannot complain when it comes to both, the amount and the quality, of local festivals. Starting with DGTL in spring, almost every following summer weekend, Amsterdam hosts the world’s top underground dance music acts (including world class local artists), presented via a flawless dutch organisational efforts of Dekmantel, Awakenings, Straf Werk, Pleinvrees, Pitch and so on. However, over the course of Amsterdam’s festival season, a lack of the unexpected musical journey, a fuller diversity of electronic sound can nevertheless be felt.  Don’t get me wrong, there is no denial that these festivals always deliver a top notch standard in every aspect – both party and ... Amsterdam’s Cruquiusgilde Warehouse Venue Announces Closure

As many have already heard, Amsterdam’s underground hotspot venue – Cruquiusgilde – is pulling the plug. Treading with a sigh, we’re uncovering the dialogue of feelings behind the venues demise, and dwelling on five great party nights the venue curated. Receiving their 24-hour license just last year, Cruquiusgilde is shutting down due to new noise restrictions imposed by the municipality. The temporary club, which would be officially open until the first quarter of 2017, is unable to operate within the short-term due to financial constraints. Thus the owners have affirmed closing down early is the best option. While this comes as a bit of a surprise, its definitely not the first club to get ... Read more

What Colour Are Your Musical Tastes?

Predominant.ly is a website looking to to revive the nostalgia of the “thrill of the hunt” for new music by abandoning genre, artist, or suggestions in favour of album cover colour. Designed by the Open Work collective, which is based in The Hague, the process of modern music discovery is described as, “We either have to search for new music (and how can you search for something that you don’t already know?) or software algorithms give helpful results that are often useless, or hilarious. The act of discovery makes our music more special to us: It’s the thrill of the hunt and the sense of discovery ... Read more

Report: Pitch Festival 2015

Last weekend saw the fifth edition of Amsterdam’s beloved Pitch Festival. Held at Westergasfabriek, the festival, known for the best and newest crossover acts and DJ’s, delivered what was promised. As Saturday, 4 July was one of the hottest days we have had in Western Europe the past few years, we tried not to burn ourselves out too early, arriving around 4 pm. After a long warm up from Woody, an unsung hero of the Berlin underground, moving the crowd at the sunny Kaap stage, I though it was high time to check out the rest of the event. The whole design at Pitch is always outstanding and aesthetically ...
