Billed as a smart speaker or, as the company puts it, “the first music player that thinks”, the Aether Cone has the ability to listen for requests, pick up on your habits, and learn your musical tastes.
Though officially launched a year ago, the company’s recent voice command upgrade now allows users to hold a dialogue with the machine. You can now ask the Cone what music is playing, get confirmation on a command, or identify which Cone is which if your home contains multiple units. Prior to the upgrade, the Cone supported voice control but with the new dialogue feature, Aether hopes to migrate user control away from its smartphone companion app and towards a much simpler user/product exchange system.
Over the past year, the Cone has gained additional features including Bluetooth and multi speaker connectivity, alongside its existing podcast, AirPlay, and Radio support. Unfortunately, the product does not integrate Spotify, Google Music or Pandora, with Rdio being its only streaming service. Sound-wise, Cone is engineered to deliver rich, detailed audio with a 3″ woofer, dual tweeters and 20-watt amplifier.
With Cone the goal is to never have to stop and search for music again. Regardless of how you prefer to control things, the smart speaker looks to create your life’s soundtrack.
