“4DSOUND enables you to walk through space and experience sound from all directions. Sound seems to hover in space – like a phantom. Sounds move around, above, beneath and in-between the listeners. Led by your ears, you’re encouraged to explore the space. You can move between blocks of sound, touch lines and walk through walls of sound.”
4DSOUND’s introductory description makes it hard not be incredibly excited and confused at the same time. 4DSOUND is a new immersive system which allows for evolving changes in three-dimensional positioning of sound. An expansive array of speakers create an entirely new listening experience, people who have already had the pleasure of hearing the brand new invention live. But how does it work and who came up with this sophisticated technological advancement?
Ableton luckily has releases two videos. In the first, which you can watch below, we learn about the conception 4DSOUND from founder Paul Oomen, plus we follow Diynamic’s Stimming as he prepares for and does a custom performance with the system in front of a live audience.
In the second video (watch here) you can learn how Ableton Live and Max for Live facilitate an artist’s control over 4DSOUND. It actually looks pretty easy to use. A more truthful statement would be that it looks easier than it probably really is. Go see it for yourself.
On a side note, 4DSOUND will have multiple professional showcases during ADE, so all of you that are interested in how the future of clubbing will sound, I would suggest to go and take a look. Dates and times can be seen in our earlier report on the ADE side-program schedule.
