Exclusive Interview With Matthias Tanzmann
Has there ever been a party, whether you were there as a DJ or visitor, that completely changed your perception of dance music and what it can do to people?
The first thing that comes to my mind here is a live performance of Matthew Herbert and Dani Siciliano I have seen back in 1997. It was the live presentation of their ‘Around The House’ album. That totally blew my mind.
Life of a touring DJ is tough and one might even say lonely at times. How do you keep yourself in the right balance?
Sometimes traveling can be pretty grounding. Especially on long flights when you suddenly realize that it has been ages that you were able to put away computer and telephone and just watch 2-3 movies. But generally, it is true. Touring can get pretty annoying. Spending half of your week in airports, planes and hotels. I am in the fortunate situation that I have somebody traveling with me. That makes things way more pleasant.
If you weren’t a DJ, what other profession would you choose for a living?
I like the idea that I would be an architect now. This is what I wanted to become when I was a kid.
In your career, have you always followed your gut?
I tried to as much as possible. But this is a privilege that you have to earn. On the way there you sometimes have to compromise. At least, when you try to make a living out of your passion. I think that is no different in any other field.
Do you have any undisclosed desires?
Bud Spencer and Terrence Hill movies. ;)
What are some of the places you are really looking forward to playing in in 2015?
We will celebrate the 15 Years anniversary of my label Moon Harbour Recordings next year. There will be a tour after the summer that I am really looking forward to.
And finally, what have you got in the pipe line studio-wise?
Right now I am finishing a remix for Chris Wood & Meat and there will be an EP with re-edits and remixes of older tracks of mine. By Nic Fanciulli, Shonky and myself. All that is coming early in 2015.
