Nowhere was Christmas and the holiday season celebrated as intensely as in New York’s Studio 54, the iconic disco nightclub known for its celebrity-filled dance floors and institutionalised debauchery. Tod Papageorge was one of the many photographers that roamed around the club during the nightly hours, immortalising scenes of Andy Warhol, Bianca Jagger, Michael Jackson and Truman Capote chatting away under glasses of $300 champagne. Time magazine calls his photographs of bleary-eyed disco queens as “something akin to poetry“. The following photographs come from various Studio 54 Christmas and holiday season parties, including images of male visitors cozying up, bowtied, scantily dressed santas and coked up bare boobed socialites. Merry x-mas.
