Take A Look Back At The Ibiza Of The 1980s And 90s
Though much has changed on the White Island over the years, a few things surely have not. Long a centre for party, fun, and excess, Ibiza’s place within the lore of hedonism remain unmatched, drawing a history of nightlife dating back to some fifty years and still thriving to this day.
What began in the 1960s as a hippy destination, eventually morphed into a disco haven, and now, the world’s most prominent clubbing area for electronic music (underground or otherwise), with the development of megaclubs like Space and Amnesia directly coinciding with the development of the island as preeminent contemporary escapist destination.
Now, Idea Books has compiled a collection of photo’s looking back at the island, specifically with a focus on its 1980’s and 1990’s scene. Taken from Ibiza Magazin, Paula’s Book, Ibiza by Ku, and Ibiza L’Isola Della Notte, the images represent a bevy of sun, feathers, and handlebar moustaches, prior to the influx days of foreign promotions and price gauging.
These photos are a nostalgic throwback to a time where celebrities, bohemians, night creatures, homos, trannies, natives and aristocrats came together, creating indescribable atmosphere and activities, many of which have become the stuff of legend.
For an even wider look at the culture of classic Ibiza, especially through the eyes of Ku (what would become Privilege, and once considered the world’s most prestigious venue), also find your way to the stacked (albeit slightly censored) Facebook page KU IBIZA – BEST YEARS (a gallery where Grace Jones appears in no small part).
