Researchers at the University of Surrey have engineered <a href=\"http:\/\/pubs.rsc.org\/en\/content\/articlelanding\/2015\/an\/c5an00112a#!divAbstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a test<\/a> that can tell if someone has\u00a0used cocaine simply by checking their fingerprints.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The new test, alongside additional research support\u00a0from Netherlands Forensic Institute, the UK&#8217;s National Physical Laboratory, King&#8217;s College London, and Sheffield Hallam University, can differentiate between people who have ingested cocaine and people who&#8217;ve barely handled\u00a0the drug.\u00a0<span class=\"s2\">&#8220;<em>When someone has taken cocaine, they excrete traces of benzoylecgonine and methylecgonine as they\u00a0metabolise\u00a0the drug, and these chemical indicators are present in fingerprint residue,<\/em>&#8221; explains the study&#8217;s lead author, <strong>Dr. Melanie Bailey<\/strong>. \u00a0&#8220;<em>The beauty of this method is that, not only is it non-invasive and more hygienic than testing blood or saliva, it can&#8217;t be faked,<\/em>&#8221;\u00a0Bailey continues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">One hurdle to the widespread implementation of the test is developing small spectrometers to make it\u00a0portable (and cheaper), with several companies\u00a0attempting to address the issue with the intention of\u00a0making\u00a0such tests more accessible to police, courts, rehabilitation programs and private consumers. Though r<\/span><span class=\"s1\">esearchers predict the developments\u00a0could lead to portable testing by said police departments, lucky for you party people, it will take another decade to properly develop. \u00a0Perhaps coinciding with some kind of artificial fingerprint technology which could render the buzz-kill approach powerless&#8230;but, for now, that is also just a dream.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Let&#8217;s face it.
