Was it a particular theme you wanted to convey? Was it a specific group of artists you wanted to showcase? Etc?
We started out with our label Indigo Raw doing a few label nights and other smaller events in Barcelona. After many years in the nightlife we felt we had something to offer during daytime and we got the opportunity to work with El Poble Espanyol. When we found the magic spot of El Monasterio in 2012 we teamed up with Dixon´s Innervisions and Watergate from Berlin. The year after, Lost in a Moment was born, we also expanded with more days, spaces and other brands such as Pampa Records and Resident Advisor just to name a few. We wanted to showcase labels and artists that otherwise would not have venues to explore in more intimate spaces during this time period.

Why did you decide to hold the events at El Poble Espanyol? Was this your first and only choice of venue? Were other venues on the “short list”?
We always had the interest of hosting our own outdoor venues, we explored various options and sites in the city but El Poble Espanyol due to its serene surroundings and practicality being in the center gave us the freedom to work on our own premises in every aspect something that was primordial in our choice.

Describe how the two areas of El Poble Espanyol compare with each other? How does the atmosphere in El Monasterio differ from the atmosphere in La Plaza Mayor? How do the two come together to form one collective atmosphere that is El Poble Espanyol?
El Monasterio due to its geographical location and surroundings is the more intimate space with a capacity of 1500 people it definitely has the charm and means to create a very special synergy between our crew, the artists and our patrons.

Plaza Mayor being a bigger space with 5000 capacity has its own energy with more space for main stage acts, with its bustling energy and bigger production on a square in midst middle age architecture, even if a bit less serene than El Monasterio, we feel the two spaces complement each other.

What is your strategy in curating lineups? Are their specific artists/brands/concepts you know you will use each year? If so, how do you balance the time between new artists and artists that you know will play IR BCN each year?
More than a strategy, as a team we always bring to the table artists and brands that we like and share values with and with whom we intend to build long-term relationships. This always starts out as a discussion on what direction we want to take with my partners Leo Perdomo and Alberto Nerone.
We have some partners we have been working with for several years this can be labels, brands, other festivals and also directly with some artists creating something new such as FRRC with Ricardo Villalobos.

This year its our first time working with one of the best festivals out there Bloc & Carl Craig’s Detroit Love, People Like Us for second year and Pampa runs into the 4th year of collaboration, something that has become one of the staples of the week at El Monasterio. Nina Kraviz’s Trip showcase will be a first one, which we are also excited about. IR will also present two big events at Plaza Mayor: Saturday presented by Ricardo Villalobos FRRC including an exclusive live from the Canadian trio Cobblestone Jazz, and Sunday Maceo Plex presenting his new concept Mosaic joined by the legend Sven Väth.

We always work in close collaborations with all our partners when booking artists both new and established trying to find a balance that moves us all.

[gallery_bank type=”images” format=”filmstrip” title=”false” desc=”false” img_in_row=”5″ display=”all” sort_by=”random” animation_effect=”bounce” image_width=”600″ album_title=”false” album_id=”243″]

Over the years, what have been some standout performances from IR BCN?
Probably some of the standout performances must have been the birth of Lost in a Moment, which both years sold out in less than 3 minutes. The Pampa Records crew also never disappoints and Dj Koze knows how to create magic every year. Nicolas Jaar’s b2b with Dave Harrington was also one for the books as well as Modern Deep Left Quartet with Mathew Jonson and his crew.

Also last year we hosted Boiler Room in collaboration with the Dekmantel crew from Amsterdam, inside the courtyard of El Monasterio for a very limited crowd with live broadcasting.
We have had over 300 artists coming through over the years and have been blessed with many special moments.

As an organization IR BCN has organized events for a decade. Can you go back in time and explain a little about your first ever event as IR BCN?
Our first ever event was actually in Ibiza at Blue Marlin also a daytime event on their beautiful beach with live acts and djs always in the same spirit. This was the early days of Blue Marlin and also pretty different times on the island. Then we moved to Barcelona and have been involved in the nightlife and lately more so day-life with our outdoor events at El Monasterio and Plaza Mayor. We also were involved in some of the infamous beach parties back in the days when there were fewer restrictions on these kinds of gatherings.

As IR BCN is (obviously) in Barcelona, what are your impressions of the city as a destination for electronic music? Aside from IR and the likes of OFF Week and Sonar, what are some of the vital electronic music destinations (year-round) in Barcelona?
Barcelona has always been a great destination for electronic music due to its laid back vibe beautiful beaches and great weather. Even if the crisis took a toll on every business in town we are now living a bristling revival with a wide arrange of offer, especially in the warmer summer months. We would have to mention Mutek festival, Primavera Sound and our own summer cycle aIR every Saturday of August as the high points but there are many other promoters offering a wide arrange of festivals and events.

If there is anything lacking in the Barcelona scene that could make it even better than it is now?
We need more support from the local authorities when it comes to licensing and time restrictions to align the playing field with other mayor European cities.

Also we are in need of some new indoor venues to be able to keep the energy going all year round.

What is your favorite aspect of Barcelona?
Barcelona has a unique energy with vast intercultural blend and a big cultural offer in general. Also the weather is mostly perfect and the city is growing in every aspect on a level not compared anywhere in the world. Being the only big city in Europe with beautiful beaches and surroundings it’s got everything we need to have a good time.

Finally, why do you personally do what you do?
We do what we do cause we love this city and truly believe we are part of something special. Always trying to improve and evolve with the ever growing expectations, our own and that of our partners and fans.

Website

15-19 June | IR BCN | Tickets | Poble Espanyol

For the fourth consecutive year, IR BCN will be presenting a series of events in unique open air locations inside Barcelona’s Poble Espanyol during the week 15th – 19th June 2016.
