We sit down with Ecuadorian techno-wizard Edd Enand to celebrate his latest release on Savia Park. Look below to find out more about the man behind the music…
Hi Edd, Pleasure to have you with us. How are you?
The pleasure is mine! Thank you for allowing me to share a little about myself in this space.
How has your year been so far? What have been the highlights?
I can say that this year started off well, I’ve connected with incredible people, I’ve been able to showcase my music in different places in New York, Orlando and Miami, and I hope to be able to reach more cities in the US.
Tell us about growing up in Ecuador and your musical journey into electronic music.
Since I was a kid, I was always surrounded by sound equipment, live music, and nightlife. My dad was a sound engineer for dance orchestras, which sparked my passion for music and desire to make music at a young age. From the age of 9, I started learning to play the drums. At 14, I discovered electronic music at the Chongon Parade festival in Guayaquil, which I couldn’t attend due to my age, but I began to explore a universe that I’m still discovering, and that’s what I love about electronic music, the vast array of genres, subgenres, and styles it has.
Would you say the scene in Ecuador has changed much? And if so for better or worse and why?
Today, several brands have brought big-name artists to Ecuadorian soil. New collectives have emerged, providing opportunities for emerging artists to showcase their talent and perform in front of hundreds of people. Additionally, there are several schools focused on electronic music, making it easier for aspiring artists to develop their skills. I think the management of events and booking of artists has greatly improved.
What is your relationship with Savia Park? How did you come to release with the label?
Savia Park was the first Ecuadorian record label I came across when I was just starting my journey in electronic music, with the idea that one day my name could be featured on one of their releases, and that’s now a reality, which excites me and fulfils one of my goals as an artist. I hope it won’t be the last, I’m sure there will be more releases to come.
Tell us about the Pentagono collective. What is the story and ethos behind that?
Pentágono was born out of the need to provide a space for techno enthusiasts in Guayaquil, both for users and artists. Our goal has always been to showcase local artists who were overlooked for playing techno, as it was impossible due to the lack of space to showcase this genre in Guayaquil. Until recently, house, tech house, and minimal were the dominant styles. Today, we can proudly say that Guayaquil is also dancing to techno, and we’re thrilled about it and the support from our entire techno community.
How would you describe your sound?
Raw and groovy with melodic patterns.
What has been your favourite gig to date?
Kozlov in Quito in 2023 for Oppose. I did the warm-up, the dance floor was packed, the public’s reaction was exhilarating, and the feedback from other artists was gratifying.
What is your current studio setup like?
I’m currently using my laptop and studio monitors, having had to sell some things before moving to Florida, but I’m in the process of setting up a new studio with new equipment. The plan is to acquire several synths and drum machines.
What do you do to relax outside of electronic music?
I enjoy digital art, I usually take photos, shoot videos, or design things.
What music do you listen to outside of electronic music?
I’m a bit eclectic, coming from a family with tropical tastes. But among my favourite genres, I have to say Rock, Hip Hop, and Reggae stand out.
What are three essential tracks at the moment for you?
Fallin In Love – Sikote
Let Me Show You – D44
My Bassline Drives You Crazy – Cltx
What is that last record that blew you away?
We are not alone pt7by BPitch Berlin
What artists have been your biggest inspiration along your musical journey?
I’d say that my favourite artists include Slipknot, Alexandra Savior, Canserbero, Kendrick Lamar, Cltx, 999999999, Karmon, Jamie Jones, and Sasha.
What can we expect from Edd Enand in the coming year?
A lot of new music is coming out, and I’ll also be travelling to new cities to showcase my music.
