Marc Romboy and Timo Maas are two experienced artists with many years in the game. Now with a project of them making music together and also many b2b sets, we caught up with them to find out why the partnership works so well, and who does what in the studio…
Hey guys, how are you both, what’s good and bad in your world right now?
Marc: All good, thanks for asking. Nothing is really bad at the moment. We have been busy in the studio and are happy that our first EP „Die Zeit“ is coming out.
Timo: All good too from my side. Focused on all the new projects… some are due to be released now and in the near future and I’m super excited about this.
How did you first meet and when and where?
Marc: Good question. Must have been in the 90s but to be honest I can‘t recall it. Timo, do you remember where we first met?
Timo: Same here… must have been somewhere in the later 90’s already… however, its been a while.. 😎
What made you decide to work together?
Marc: The end of last year we were booked in a cool club called „Die Nacht“ and then the idea came that it could be fun to make a b2b allnighter set instead of playing after each other. The night was fantastic and we meshed with each other so that we decided the next day to a) watch the football worldcup final together and b) to make some music together.
Who does what? Do you each have separate roles in the studio?
Timo: Marc is engineering all the production… we both contribute different parts and views to the projects. sometimes sounds, often just feelings, intentions with our very diverse points of views… I think when we say we both inspire each other a lot it hits the nail on the head.
How similar or different are your perspectives on making music?
Timo: See above… we both have a lot of experience in many different fields of music and business… we decided that the combination of our experiences but also networks makes complete sense in regards to the constantly changing music and club scene/business. The different angle and experience of how we see, produce and handle our music is a strong force as we managed to have done pretty much everything in our combined careers , …from classical concerts, festivals to underground clubs, from top of the pops to grammy nominations back to coolest techno and experimental projects….
Why does the partnership work, what’s the secret to it?
Marc: From my perspective I can say that every collaboration I did was very life enhancing because everyone works differently and has diverse talents and likings. Timo came up with a couple of cool ideas, vocal samples and sounds so that it was pretty easy to start from scratch. I love to make music on my own and this is why I just released my album „Music Made For Aliens“ but from time to time it‘s also fantastic to team up and create dynamic processes.
Timo: Not much to add here… inspiration, experience and a huge portion of fun and laughter!
Will you play live together or dj? How might that work?
Marc: We will play b2b DJ sets and think about adding a few live components to the show but this is something for the future.
Tell us about the first record “Die Zeit”, what inspired it, what the aim was?
Timo: It’s all about the vocal, which was the first key element of this track “constantly time is running…the future….will be the past” the rest of the track came completely organically together, which was also a key point for us to realize we have to make more than just a track or two. Such moments are rather rare.
What else have you got coming up/are you working on together?
Timo: Next up after DIE ZEIT will be another new release on Dskonnect Rec in May which features completely AI generated vocal sections and more driving infectious beats and vibes… Several more tracks and projects are in the making… as we say, we’re taking the chance now to surprise and impress with combined forces… be prepared! 😎
