Tell us about your journey into music and how you became known as Oktave?

My journey into music began early with seven years of formal training at a music school, where I honed my skills on the saxophone through my teenage years. Influenced by a diverse array of genres from my parents (ranging from Deep Purple and Stan Getz, to Pink Floyd and Donna Summer) I developed a passion for exploring different musical styles. It was only when I discovered electronic music, especially through iconic artists like Daft Punk, Bob Sinclar, Diplo, and Busy P, that I truly found my calling.

The name “Oktave” represents my desire to explore soulful house music while honoring my musical background and French heritage.

What inspired you to start the Palosanto music label?

Palosanto was born from a passion for sharing exceptional music and creating meaningful experiences. After immersing myself in the vibrant music scenes of New York and experiencing a transformative period in Tulum during the pandemic, I felt inspired to establish a platform where I could curate and release music that deeply resonates with listeners.

Founded in 2019, Palosanto began as an event series and has since become a key player in the Afro-house scene in New York. As a natural extension of our commitment to our loyal audience, I launched our own curated music label, which has since become well-established.

Palosanto is more than just a music label – it’s a community where you feel safe and connected with others who share a passion for music. It was the logical next step for us to deliver quality music to our fans, further enriching their experience with us.

How would you describe your musical style and how has it evolved over the years?

My musical style blends deep house and afro house rhythms with soulful melodies and catchy grooves. As I’ve explored production techniques and what makes me happy, my style has evolved. I produce music that makes me feel good, aiming to evoke emotions by combining traditional house music elements with modern influences. My goal is to make people dance or feel something genuine.

What have been some of the most memorable moments in your career so far?

My career has been filled with memorable moments, from performing at iconic venues to creating events that have resonated with many people from around the world. One standout experience was launching Palosanto and receiving such a positive response from both artists and fans. Another highlight has been collaborating with talented artists, where I’ve seen firsthand how teamwork can elevate creativity and push musical boundaries. My favorite festival experience was performing at the Echoes from Agartha festival in Cappadocia, Turkey, while my favorite club performance was at Mirage in New York, where I played for 3,000 people. It’s amazing how music can connect people – sometimes you feel like you’ve known someone forever just because you share the same values and sensibilities.

Can you share your experience working with various artists and how collaboration influences your music?

Working with diverse artists has been incredibly enriching. Collaborations bring fresh perspectives and ideas to the table, enhancing the creative process and leading to innovative music. Each artist contributes their unique strengths and influences, resulting in a dynamic exchange of ideas that ultimately shapes the final product. It’s rewarding to see how different artistic visions can harmoniously come together in music.

In 2019, I took Ableton classes at 343 Labs in New York to master the DAW and explore music production techniques. I actively sought feedback from established producers to understand their approaches to track creation, from the initial foundation to arrangement and mixing. This practical experience has profoundly shaped my approach to making music.

What role has the New York music scene played in shaping your sound and career?

New York City’s vibrant music scene has inspired and fueled my growth. Its mix of cultures and genres offers endless opportunities for experimentation and collaboration, influencing my sound and pushing me to explore new musical territories. Everything moves quickly in this city, with many people staying temporarily and constantly shifting influences and trends. The city’s curiosity and dynamic nature give me the strength to be myself and stay true to the music I love.

Tell us about the other branch of the Palosanto banner?

Palosanto is an agency with three main branches: a music label, event production, and a booking agency.

The music label is the latest addition, with monthly releases starting in August 2024.

Since 2019, I’ve been organizing Palosanto events, including weekly Thursday nights, club and boat parties, and rooftop gatherings, each drawing between 300 and 900 people. Known for hosting over 50 events annually in New York, you can follow us on Instagram to catch our upcoming events: @oktavemusik and @palosantonyc.

Additionally, Palosanto operates as a booking agency, representing a growing roster of talented international music producers that we are proud to support.

What advice would you give to aspiring DJs and producers looking to make a mark in the industry?

Stay true to your passion and unique artistic vision. Focus on honing your craft, whether it’s through production skills, DJ techniques, or networking within the industry. Embrace collaboration and learn from experienced artists. Most importantly, be persistent and resilient in the face of challenges – success in the music industry often requires dedication and perseverance.

What have you got coming up?

I have several exciting projects in the pipeline, including new releases on Palosanto that I’m really excited about. But I can’t tell you more!

How do you stay inspired and keep your music fresh?

I draw inspiration from everyday experiences, traveling, exploring new cultures, and connecting with fellow artists and music lovers. Listening to a variety of genres keeps me open-minded and innovative, while collaborations push me to evolve my sound. Though it can be challenging, staying aware of global trends is crucial for long-term success.

Thanks to Deep House London for the great questions! I’m excited for the future and eager to share more music with the electronic music community.
