The Mekanism is a French artist/producer with an excellent resume across a wide variety of musical styles and tastes. He also has released on some of the most respected labels around like 20/20 Vision, Moan Recordings, elrow Music and many many more. With a new EP “Live My Life” on Italian label AdMaiora Music, we caught up with him to find out what’s what, and how the EP came to be…
Hey The Mekanism, how are you, how has 2021 been for you?
Hi! I’m well, living my dream 🙂
It was a very messy and interesting year, I tried to see in the pandemic a positive thing to further my career through my music production, and life in general… I realised the chances we have to live our dream and earn money with our passion! I sometimes took this for granted I think before the pandemic.
What was it like to get back to partying and DJing again after the pandemic?
Incredible sensation, a bit strange at the beginning to be with a lot of people again but an amazing feeling …. and I enjoy even more of each second behind the decks!
You’re a pretty prolific producer, where does the inspiration come from to create?
It comes from everywhere, quality time with family and friends, travelling a lot, big parties and some differents trips 🙂
How do you work, do you have an idea in your head you work towards or do you just experiment and jam and see what happens?
I never have an idea, it’s why I’m producing always different styles from disco to deep minimal or acid house! I love to jam with my machines and looking for some samples, then I see where the sound takes me!
Tell us about your upcoming AdMaiora Music “Live My Life” EP – how did you come to hook up with the label?
I had loved the last release out on the label, so I contacted them to have the promo and we kept in touch! They asked me to do an EP so I said yes for sure!
Do you make music that suits certain labels or do you create first and worry about that later?
I tried to do music for specific labels, and it never came 😂 I think if you do that, you will lose a part of the creativity, being too much in a specific style! I think in electronic music, even more now we really need new ideas, a bit different to what we all listen to.
What are some of the key bits of music making gear in your current set up?
Mpc one for beats, roland mc 505 and electribe for the grooves (I launch everything with the pioneer and I jam a lot)
For basses and synth I use a lot my yamaha Rm1x , and I sample a lot again using that.
Where is your best environment as a dj? A small dark club or a huge outdoor festival stage? Late at night for the weirdos or early so you can play slow and eclectic etc etc?
It’s so different but so complementary! Small dark clubs are great to be wild and in connection with people, but who doesn’t want to play on a big stage in front of thousands of people! The feeling is just magic even if u feel alone on the stage 😂
What is the scene in France like where you are, are you a lone operator or are you part of a vibrant creative community?
The scene is cool, but I feel it misses a big community scene for sharing like Berlin etc
I was for 3 years in an amazing warehouse with Polo & Pan and another great artists (visual, sculpteurs …that called Mad Agency) This was really my best years for creativity, and being around likeminded people.
What else have you got coming up/are you working on?
I have a beautiful Ep with my friend Salome le Chat, out soon on Bambossa (Harry Romero’s Label)
I also have an Ep out on Wyld with my bro’s II Faces and a special remix from MADVILLA!
The beginning of 2022 I will be part of the new label of Distrikt (the burning man camp), when I will release an Ep with a big acid house track 🙂
