Italy’s Marco Faraone is a prolific and versatile producer/DJ whose incendiary live sets have earned him International acclaim.
Also the founder of UNCAGE Records, Marco became fascinated by the 90s house championed by Masters At Work and Todd Terry, whilst admiring Laurent Garnier for his ability to effortlessly play diverse sets. Since then he has released his own music on the likes of Drumcode, Desolat, Be As One, Sci+Tec, Moda Black, Holic Trax, Get Physical and Truesoul, while DJing alongside names like Adam Beyer, Loco Dice, Ricardo Villlalobos, Dixon, Marcel Dettman, Ben Klock, Carl Cox, Nina Kraviz, Solomun and Chris Liebing at his Tenax club residency.
On 9 September, Marco finds himself at Kent’s The Social Festival, an event organized by Saved! Records founder and DJ veteran himself Nic Fanciulli, which sees a who’s who of dance music masters, past and present, descend to its grounds. Anticipating the gig, Marco was kind enough to provide his 5 favorite tracks from Social Festival artists and also give a bit of insight into his own preparation for the gig.

The Social is a festival event organized and curated by Nic Faniciulli. Can you tell us a bit about your relationship with Nic and your thoughts on the festival he has put together?
Nic is a good friend of mine and he puts together an incredible festival. I’m very happy to see so many good artists and friends reunited in one weekend. I’ve heard it’s one of the most important festivals in Europe and of course, the UK. I’ve been following Nic and his label for a very long time now and I have huge amounts of respect for him as an artist and what he is doing with Social and his label. He’s a very good person, very humble and something that’s not easy to find in other big artists like him. We played a b2b set a few months ago in Belgium and I loved every minute of it. The vibe was amazing. I’m looking forward to seeing him again this weekend.
There will be many big time sets going down at The Social, from Andrew Weatherall, Laurent Garnier and, of course, Sasha & Digweed. Who are some artists you are particulalry keen on checking out there? What about from a personal perspective, who are some of your friends and peers who you are most looking forward to seeing?
I was looking forward to seeing the legend Laurent Garnier, he is my favourite DJ but unfortunately he’s playing on the Saturday and my sets on Friday and then I have to leave right away. I always feel so happy and inspired when I see him play. Most of my close friends are playing on the Saturday actually like Joseph Capriati, Ellen Allien, Dubfire, Pan Pot, that’s going to be a crazy day! But I’m looking forward to spend some time with my homie Loco Dice, Eats Everything and Nastia who are playing the same stage as me on Friday. I’m very intrigued to see Paranoid London perform as I’ve been playing their music a lot in my sets.
Can you tell us a little about the playlist you have put together today. What was your thought process behind its curation?
I never organise or prepare my music before my sets. I prefer to go with the flow of the party and see what they are feeling. Sometimes I will create an idea in my mind but if it doesn’t fit with the crowd, it leaves me feeling downhearted. So now I will just get there, look at the crowd and try to share my emotions with them.
Something non Social related now, as it is the busy summertime season. How has your summer been going? What have been your highlights? What are you still looking forward to? How do you plan on winding down after the summer ends?
This summer was absolutely amazing, filled with so many great events. I’ve been playing at amazing parties in Ibiza like Elrow at Space and Music On at Amnesia, where I was invited by Marco Carola. It was such an honour to play at those events. I’ve played at some amazing festivals too. I had an incredible experience in Cuba celebrating 35 years of Tenax, where I’m currently a resident. We hosted a party at Fabrica de arte cubans, a huge club in Havana and it was so interesting to see the crowds reaction in a place where the electronic music scene is still quite underground. Winter is going to be another busy period for me as I’ll be spending a lot of time in the studio producing new EPs and remixes and who knows, maybe a new album.
Finally, what should we be on the lookout from you in the coming months?
This year has already been very busy with releases, maybe too many. I’ve released 3 EPs in 5 months on labels like Drumcode, Ovum and In Motion Music which is quite a lot but I never stop producing music even whilst I’m travelling. This winter I’ll be releasing a new EP on my UNCAGE label with 2 big remixes which I can’t announce yet. There will also be the release of the official remix of the classic Doppelwhipper from Gabriel Ananda which is being played by everyone and a new EP for our family label Tenax Recording. I also have some big surprises which will be announced very soon.
