Renowned for his ability to craft infectious, dancefloor-ready rhythms that first saw him championed by Hot Creations label boss Jamie Jones, Patrick Topping has found his ascension to the ranks of DJ elite rapid and lasting. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Now 26 years old, Patrick first built a DJ career around playing at his own popular club night, Motion<\/strong> at Digital Newcastle where he booked and played alongside some of the biggest names in the business. First coming to the dance world\u2019s attention with critically-acclaimed debut EP \u2018Walk On\u2019<\/strong> via Hot Trax in 2013 – followed by equally successful follow up EP \u2018Any Amounts\u2019<\/strong> on Hot Creations.<\/p>\n

Now, Patrick\u2019s far-reaching appeal has also seen him complete many tours of the US, 3 Australian tours and as well as countless shows in South America and Europe, including appearances at major international festivals such as Glastonbury, Hideout, Tomorrowland<\/strong> in both Brazil & Belgium, and TomorrowWorld<\/strong> in Atlanta, cementing his status as one of the most in demand names in dance music.<\/p>\n

As Patrick Topping will be playing We Are FSTVL<\/strong>‘s Paradise<\/strong> area, we caught up with the man of the moment to discuss his summer plans, festival selection procedure, origins, and more. Patrick will be playing alongside Jamie Jones, The Martinez Brothers, Maya Jane Coles, Solomun, Hot Since 82, wAFF<\/strong>, and Nathan Barato<\/strong> at We Are FSTVL and his latest EP ‘Baddie’ is now available or Lee Foss<\/strong>‘ Repopulate Mars<\/strong> imprint.<\/p>\n

“As soon as I had a release out there then people outside of Newcastle took an interest”<\/span><\/h3>\n

You’re from Newcastle originally, can you tell us about how you went from a local to internationally traveling DJ?<\/strong>
\nReleasing music! I was just DJing locally before having anything out. As soon as I had a release out there then people outside of Newcastle took an interest and started booking me.<\/p>\n

By now you\u2019re a high in demand DJ at most of these festivals, how do you select where you\u2019re going to play – do you turn down a lot of offers?<\/strong>
\nYes, my agent does without mentioning, ha! We do discuss gigs a lot and you have to turn down a few to find the right balance. Fortunately I\u2019m lucky enough to be in that position!<\/p>\n

Have you been able to hit the gym in between all the gigging spots?<\/strong>
\nA little, depends if I been partying or not<\/p>\n

You\u2019ve got some pretty big performances lined up – such as We Are FSTVL, which is a rapidly rising boutique festival – are there specific elements of these festivals you prefer over others?<\/strong>
\nI just really like playing out and love all festivals. The tents are cool as you can get an atmosphere going, but I really love to DJ outdoors if it\u2019s sunny.<\/p>\n

You’re on the Paradise stage for We Are FSTVL, what is it about Jamie Jones\u2019 Paradise brand that you think compliments your own DJ style?<\/strong>
\nI\u2019ve released a lot on his label and also have some music forthcoming. I guess musically, Jamie is into what I do, which makes it work – he\u2019s one of my favourite DJs and I\u2019m inspired a lot by his DJ sets. I think we\u2019re into the same style.<\/p>\n

When\u2019s the next visit to Ibiza going to be for you? What do you have lined up on the island this year?<\/strong>
\nI\u2019m a resident at Paradise this year and also have a few dates at Space for different promoters. I think I\u2019m over there about 10 times this summer.<\/p>\n

So I hear you\u2019ve got a new EP coming up \u2013 what\u2019s your latest inspiration for it?<\/strong>
\nFor the lead track \u2018Baddie\u2019 I wanted to make something dark, but with a rolling tech house feel. On the second track \u2018Majestic\u2019, I was inspired by some of the more melodic, euphoric songs I’m into.<\/p>\n

Last question, you linked up with Samuel L. Jackson recently – what\u2019s the story behind that?<\/strong>
\nIt was a bit of a shock when I heard, and I thought it was a wind up or someone taking the piss. When I met him he was really cool \u2014 I\u2019m playing for the charity he supports, called One For The Boys.<\/p>\n
