He is a German from Frankfurt—a place that is best known for techno clubs like Cocoon and The Omen and has now been active for ten years. In that time he ha made a name for himself as a serious selector who has played all over the world. He also runs his own label, Deep Vibes, and has put out a range of great music from carefully A&Red artists, as well as two of his own full lengths and countless EPs. He also releases on myriad other labels form Cocoon to Rumors.

Here, we catch up with him to ask about how he likes the sun, ask about what exactly is deep hose and to talk about some of his studio gear.

“In the night time I make more deeper and darker tracks…”

How are you? Are you someone who enjoys summer? Does sunshine make you play different music?
I`m fine thank you. Yes, I really love the summertime, finally you can go out enjoy the sun and put some meat on the grill.;) Yes, I play a little bit different when I play outside. The tracks I play have some more synths or chords in thej. Not so dark, bassline, groovin tracks when I play in a really sweaty and dusty night club.

Are you inspired by your surroundings? Does your music sound different when and wear you make it or does it always roughly come out the same?
I get inspired everywhere, from people, landscapes and, of course. music. Actually, I’m always making music in my studio I don`t like when I have all my analog equipment around me. In the night time I make more deeper and darker tracks and the daytime there are more melodic elements in them. When I`m in the studio with Christian Burkhardt also the sound can change a little bit. But I think I my own style and you can hear in every production.

Are you a hardware or software man, and what are some of your favourite tools in the studio?
I really like to use analog equipment, but there are also some good plugins I use. For hardware I like the Dave Smith & Waldorf and for software I like the plugins from SPL and Native Instruments.

Hailing from Frankfurt, was/is there a good knee there? Is it healthy, are there lots of young people coming through?
We still have a good scene here, a lot of my friends like Christian Burkhardt, Markus Fix, Arno (e Einzelkind), Chris Wood and Carsten (meat) live here. But there are also some young guys coming up like Martyne, Bodin & Jacob, the guys from Hardworksoftdrink and Manuel Schatz, who will open a new record store called “Gosu” in Frankfurt.

Do DJing and making music inform one another for you or are the two separate? Are you imagining the dance floor when in the studio?
I try to produce music for the dancefloor, music that I would play in my DJ sets. Sometimes I make also some other kind of music, like hip hop instrumental stuff or breaks or ambient music.

Deep you has become really popular in recent years – is that good or bad for you, who has alway made deep music?
The good thing is that more people know the music and my music. The bad think is that a lot of people use this name just because it is IN, but the music they are producing has nothing to do with real house music. Real Deep House Music came mostly from the US and UK. In Germany there was Playhouse Records from Frankfurt or producers like Soulphiction. Deep House Music from the US comes from Mike Huckaby, Rick Wade, Moodymann, Chris Gray, Theo Parrish, Kerri Chandler just to name a few. For the UK you have Freaks and Herbert. Just to tell you a few names, sorry for the other ones I forgot, I have a huge record collection and there are some producers there just making one or two records in the past and there were making real deep house music too.

You release on many labels from Cocoon to Rumours – do you make different stuff for each depending on who it is?
I start producing music with an idea but most of the time something different will come out. After I make a few tracks I think about on which labels they could fit. Let me explain this, when I make a more deeper house track it wouldn`t fit on Cocoon, because the label sounds stands for more techno music, so when I finish something that goes in the techno direction I send it over to Cocoon or some other label how stands for this kind of sound.

Do you need to release music to get gigs these day? I think thats generally how it works, but how do you feel about that?
To be honest yes you need to do releases to get gigs in different clubs. The promoter needs something from you to hear to find out what kind of dude you are. It feels ok because I love to bring out my music on vinyl.

You have an awful lot of music coming this year – are you always writing or are you just in a particular purple patch right now?
I just finished two new remixes this week. But I had before a 4 weeks break because I was on my world tour (Australia, South America and Thailand). So I was really hot going back to my studio and also I try as often as I can to work on some music.

What else you got coming up/are you looking forward to?
I really looking forward to my next Deep Vibes recordings “The Basic Collective EP Part 5”. It is with Aquarius Heaven who did some great vocals on one track.

I will go in the next weeks in my studio to work on an EP for Third Ear. Which should be deeper House Music.

With a new EP out on Minimood, can you identify what its starting point was? What was the first aspect of the EP that came to you and you built around?
To start with I made three Versions of this Track. I played these to Voltmar (Minimood) in the hotel room when we were playing together at Kugl in St Gallen. He liked them very much and we discussed the Idea of combining these three Versions into one long track.

The idea behind the track was once more to do something really minimalistic with of course really deep, dark and a little bit dirty sounds! In my opinion we found a great remixer “Ion Ludwig” who made an outstanding version of my original track.

What would you like listeners, fans, and newcomer to know about the EP?
At this time the sound goes more into a typical Trelik, Pal Sl, Baby Ford track. The Ion Ludwig is also a really slow-building; dub minimilistic house track.

What is a vital “go to” piece of production equipment for you? What if I asked you that question 10 years ago?
For me right now SE-1 for Bassline is my first choice and even after 10 years it is still one of my favorite pieces of analog equipment to use.

Soundcloud Artist Page

Deep house has never been more popular than it is right now, but much of the stuff called deep is not at all.
