With artists like David Scuba, Eric Volta, Jay Tripwire, Jonas Saalbach, Kiki, Louie Fresco, Maher Daniel, Silky, Superlounge and more on its back catalogue it’s no wonder the label has become a favorite of everyone from Solomun to Joris Voorn to Danny Tenaglia to Nick Warren.

With that, we’ll let the label and the music do the talking from here on out. Also, at the end of this showcase, you’ll find an exclusive mixtape from Motek’s Stevie R, giving an idea of how the sound of Motek really is meant to be heard. Stevie R has released on the likes of OFF Recordings, Babiczstyle, Parquet, Inside Out Records, Union Jack Records, Steyoyoke, and is a core member of the Motek team, acting as sound engineer and creative director!

“The dream Motek artist is an unknown artist that we haven’t discovered yet”

What does Motek add to the dance music spectrum?
Well we’re sure you wouldn’t expect us to say otherwise, but we think we release some pretty good cutting edge dance music from some very talented artists that is making people move on dance floors all over the world!

When did you first think about launching Motek?
Motek started out running nights originally across London for a few years. It was always part of the plan to start the label eventually as the natural next step when the time was right. We wanted to make sure we had grown a base following and roster of artists through our events to enable a strong start to the label side of the business. This has allowed us to spread our parties worldwide.

When did Motek actually launch?
We started running parties in London in April 2011 and we launched the label in June 2014.

Story behind the Motek name?
It came about when playing around with the word Techno. Lots of interesting names came out of this but a lot were taken or didn’t feel quite right. Motek stood out to us and came fairly quickly and we later found out by chance that it is a term of endearment in Hebrew, roughly translated to something similar to ‘cutie’!

What was the most difficult aspect of launching the label?
Getting a strong release pipeline in place and releasing consistently as a new label is not easy, it took us a while to get there. We are a small team so as the label has grown, we have had to juggle a lot of work between us.

What qualities do you look for in a Motek artist?
Music wise, we look for originality and some kind of edge in the sound. It has to stand out to our ears, whether it is a Deep melodic number or a Techno bomb. Also, whether the artist is new or established we look for friendly, down to earth personalities that would fit into the Motek family. No Divas here!!

[gallery_bank type=”images” format=”filmstrip” title=”true” desc=”false” img_in_row=”4″ display=”all” sort_by=”random” animation_effect=”bounce” image_width=”600″ album_title=”false” album_id=”312″]

Describe 3 seminal moments in Motek existence?
Firstly the Brixton Club House party was a massive moment for us. We had a fantastic line up, the weather was amazing, we sold out and everyone there was up for a good time. It was our best party to date and everything came together.

The 1st release on the label was a special moment as it was something we had been leading up to for a long time, and to finally start the label and get going was a great feeling.

More recently, hearing John Digweed at Output NYC play the Jay Tripwire Remix of Leman & Dieckmann’s ‘Tempted’ was a real buzz. When a House legend plays your music you know you are doing something right!

Most disappointing moment in Motek existence?
We had a few releases which we thought were very strong and thought that they would blow up, but that hasn’t happened yet. We do have a lot of belief in what we are doing, and we will keep on releasing music that we love, whether releases become big successes or not.

Describe Motek album artwork?
The Artwork is generally photographic, covering landscapes, nature, interesting scenes, things like that, most of them are based on real photographs taken by us on our travels! The layout is generally kept consistent and we would say we have found a style that is pretty unique.

Best Motek showcase?
As mentioned above, we did a party in Brixton at the Brixton Club House, London a couple of years back. We sold out the venue with over a 1,000 people in. The line up was very strong (Eric Volta, Balcazar & Sordo, Simon Baker) and the crowd went crazy, we have never seen anything like that at any party, let alone ours!

Worst Motek showcase?
We have not had any bad showcases as such but we did have an interesting night at a party last year. The headliner arrived from Berlin and after being dropped off at the hotel, he basically disappeared. We called his mobile and hotel room numerous times, knocked on his door for several hours, but nothing. Numerous scenarios came through our heads, none of which were good, we were panicking! We finally convinced the hotel manager to open the door to his room and it was that the headliner just fell into an ultra deep sleep and slept through his alarm and all the calls and door knocks. He ended up arriving just in time for his set time, so it all was all fine in the end!

Dream Motek artist?
The dream Motek artist is an unknown artist that we haven’t discovered yet, whose music blows us away and who we release! We are always on the lookout for exceptional new talent, so send us your demos, we listen to all of them!

Most important business/music app/program/software?
It would have to be Soundcloud for us, getting our music and our sound to the world!

Longest Day(s) ever worked?
Like most people in the industry we have had some party marathons, where we hosted a day party, followed by a night party followed by an official and then an unofficial afterparty. We were of course fully professional during these parties and treated it as a job only…..

Upcoming projects?
Quite a few things on the go. With recent showcases in Austin Texas, Mexico City and Olso, there will be more to come in different locations worldwide, so stay tuned! On the label side apart from the EP releases, we will launch ‘Motek Journeys’ compilation series, which will showcase artists from a particular part of the world in each of the releases. The first one is ‘Motek Journeys: USA’ released on October 3rd, which we are very excited about! Also expect some more releases from the Motek crew within the label, both separately and together! Finally, we will also be working on more free Motek Music bootleg remixes after the success of our take on Massive Attack’s ‘Ritual Spirit’.

Download Soundcloud Artist Page

Tracklist

1) After Altamont feat.
