They’ve been representing for 15 years now and have been responsible for some of the scene’s most popular hits, as well as supporting a large portion of underground artists and putting on parties all over the world. They are an iconic brand with a strong ethos and have kept on going despite some rough times, when house music was a dirty word… So it was only right that we give them some shine to celebrate their fantastic milestone. So here we have Defected bossman Simon Dunmore listing the label’s highlights, year by year… Big ups to all the Defected gang!

1999

• The label’s debut release, Soulsearcher’s ‘I Can’t Get Enough’ reaches No.8 in the UK singles chart:
As a record label owner, you’re always going to remember the first record you put out. For it to do so well as club and then commercially definitely gave me the confidence that what we were doing was right. This really set the tone for everything that followed with Defected.

2000

• Bob Sinclar releases Champs Elysees, Defected Records’ first artist album:
Bob Sinclar has made some incredible records over his career, and has literally saved Defected more than once. This is a stunning album, subtle in places with enough dancelfoor moments to keep up the momentum. A really incredible achievement.

2001

• Roger Sanchez ‘Another Chance’ tops the UK singles chart:
I remember hearing that we were going be top the charts a few hours before I was officially announced. I took a little time to myself, and literally cried with happiness. We were going through some financial difficulties at the time and this kept us going. A really special moment.

2002

• Shakedown ‘At Night’ reaches No.6 in the UK singles chart:
At Night is one of those records that you still hear played out all over the place. It’s commercial success was one thing, but it’s really its longevity that impressed me. It still sounds super fresh, and that vocal is probably one of the most appropriate in house music.

[youtube id=”EgO3r1U8ub0″ width=”620″ height=”360″]

2003

• Launch of the Defected In the House compilation series – In The House 1 mixed by Jay J and Miguel Migs:
Our ‘In The House’ series has always been our flagship release. I’m incredibly proud of all the amazing artist with whom we worked over the years, and it all started here.

2004

• Defected wins Best Label at House Music Awards:
Another incredibly proud moment, to be recognised by your peers is always a fantastic feeling. Dance music was really up against it around this time, so this was a real confidence booster.

2005

• The first year of Defected In The House at Pacha Ibiza:
I vividly remember getting the call from Mark Netto at Pacha, when we had a residency at El Divino. I told him we were very happy at El Divino, but of course I was super excited as we obviously wanted to be at Pacha. After that we had over a decade of amazing parties there… pretty special!

2006

• Blaze feat. Barbara Tucker – ‘Most Precious Love’ reached No.17 in the UK charts and marks the start of Defected’s relationship with Dennis Ferrer:
Dennis is a quite exceptional producer and I only needed to hear the opening few bars of this to know it was going to be a huge record for us. Thankfully I wasn’t wrong and we’ve enjoyed an excellent relationship with Dennis ever since.

[youtube id=”GnbKt7GWRKE” width=”620″ height=”360″]

2007

• Defected joins forces with Strictly Rhythm:
To join forces with one of the greatest house labels the world has ever seen was a privilege. Mark Finkelstein is a brilliant businessman and a close friend and to begin a working relationship with him was fantastic.

2008

• Defected In The House hosts stage at Sunburn Festival Goa:
The electronic music scene in India used to be all about psy-trance, but Sunburn started to change that. I believe we were the first house label in the world to be involved with the festival, which was a big step for us.

2009

• 10 year anniversary party at Ministry of Sound, London:
Celebrating at Ministry of Sound with our residents and guest DJs was yet another proud moment. We’ve enjoyed a healthy relationship with the club over the years and our parties there have gone from strength to strength. Pretty much the only club in the world I would call home for us.

2010

• First record label to host night iTunes Festival party at The Roundhouse:
Another first for Defected! We had Candi Staton performing live amongst a host of other incredible DJs and live acts, and then did it all again at Ministry of Sound the next night. A big, memorable weekend.

[youtube id=”bOH-a6yYoo0″ width=”620″ height=”360″]

2011

• Defected wins Best British Label at DJ Mag awards:
As I said previously, recognition from your peers is always great, and DJ Mag have been both tastemakers and long-term supports of the label. This was a great end to the year.

2012

• Simon Dunmore wins Outstanding Achievement award at IMS:
Of course it’s fantastic to have a lot of hard work recognised, but it hasn’t been all about my own time and effort; it’s also down to all the amazing people I’ve had the opportunity to work with over the years. I was surprised and flattered to receive this award.

2013

• Storm Queen ‘Look Right Through’ hits No.1 in the UK Singles chart:
We worked this record long and hard at club level and then teamed up with Ministry of Sound for the commercial release. It couldn’t have gone better. Hats off to both Morgan Geist and MK for contributing to this records success… and what a record it is!

2014

• Mixmag cover and party at Oval Space marks the start of the Defected 15 Club Tour with parties at Watergate, Avalon, Womb and more…
Another tastemaker and supporter of the label… to have Defected on the cover of Mixmag was a privilege. The event at Oval Space was also incredible – the perfect way to kick off what ended up being a pretty spectacular tour.

Defected In The House, mixed by the legendary Masters At Work is out right now and it’s No.1 on the iTunes Dance Chart!
