His latest offering, the ‘Cats On The Rocks’ EP is unveiled on Music For Freaks and comes almost 3 years since his last foray with the imprint.

We caught up with Lord Leopard to discuss the new music, his motivation through the pandemic and much more.

Cat’s On The Rocks EP: https://lnk.to/MFFD15039

How have you been doing these past few months, what’s new with you?

I am about to be a DAD for the first time!

Also… I have been slowly slipping back into my old life, that of a music producer, dj, event promoter & teacher… I feel like that got lost for a while during lockdown and now I am remembering what that feels like.

Have you had any chances to perform post-lockdown, what’s it been like?

Yes! I DJ’d with my Alfresco Disco crew at a festival called Farmfest, near Bruton, last weekend. You could sense there was a real need to get back to doing what people love, ie dancing and getting into some fruity antics in a field. But with a bit of caution. I also played at Lakota (legendary bristol club) the weekend before that and people were really ‘dancing like nobody’s watching’, right from the start!

How much did the pandemic and being at home alter the style of music you produce, did it have an effect on its sound, and overall vibe?

I’m not going to lie… in terms of making ‘dance music’ it was uninspiring… I’d love to say I wrote an album or two but I felt devoid of inspiration for the most part. Without labels to release on or nights to play new music at, it seemed a bit futile. Plus I couldn’t use the studio half the time. However I did pick up the guitar, my bass and got a really nice mic that I have been recording lots of random noodling with… so watch out for that…

Cats On The Rocks is a three-tracker out now on Music For Freaks, what has the reaction been like?

Good so far… The EP doesn’t fit into any particular house sound (or does it?) and I wrote the tracks at different times in my life, and in different places – but I think it works nicely as an EP.. DJs like Steve Lawler have messaged me out the blue saying how much they dig it, which is nice.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXJ7qaoj2mQ

How did you approach the production across the three tracks, and what inspired the whole release?

‘Cats on the rocks’ was my attempt to emulate early Thomas Bangalter on his Roule releases. I used a gating technique that I had just discovered at the time. If you listen to Trax on the rocks and others of his from this period you could make the connection.

‘H.I.I.M.Y.L.F’ I wrote under the covers, hungover, using one bit of audio looped over and over but modulating constantly in various ways. I tried a couple of times to go in on it afterwards and do a ‘proper’ version of the track… but it ruined it each time! So what you hear is what I did in 2 hours, in bed, on my laptop!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyX3nRQE3pQ

‘Toolin’ Around’ is probably my favourite and is what I would call a ‘sample chain’ track. Listen to ‘Let’s Ride’ by Q Tip which was produced by J Dee… I used all the samples as he did for that, but made it house. With each track, I was messing around having fun not thinking too much, and I find that’s when the best music happens.

More generally, how much does the west country landscape and music scene and way of life inspire your productions?

I think being able to escape the city and get in the sea is the best thing. Or vice versa. As soon as you get into a different environment I find the creative side of your brain often starts into action. I used to find it going from Bristol to London and I find it going from Bristol to the Beach for a surf – or whatever. I do think Bristol / The westcountry exists in it’s own creative bubble to a certain extent. Bristol in particular, is full of people doing their own thing musically, and making stuff happen.

Who’s been one of the most inspiring figures in the scene for you and why?

I’m a big fan of people who do their own thing and have their own sound/identity without seeming to care about current trends. When you hear a track and you know instantly who it is.

Following the most recent release, what other plans do you have going forward you can tell us about?

Lookout for my upcoming events over the next few months and lookout for my next EPs on Edible and Alfresco Disco which are aimed with both eyes aimed squarely toward the dancefloor!

Lord Leopard first put himself on the radar of dance music with his 2018 release ‘The Bumps’ on Edible records, the track found it’s way into forward thinking DJ’s sets and ended up smashing big room soundsystems worldwide.
