Today, Sokkary’s music is supported by the industry’s finest names and outlets. Combination of elements and styles is what describes Sokkary best. For him, music means absolutely zero boundaries.
We sat down with him to know more about his passions and his latest release…

Hey Sokkary, introduce yourself to us an tell us about your journey?

Hi guys, first of all, thank you so much for having me. I’ve been a big fan of your platform for a while and I’m really happy to be part of it at last.

My name is Mohamed El Sokkary, I’m 24 years old, and I’m an Egyptian DJ/Producer and Soundtrack Composer from Alexandria, Egypt currently based between Qatar and The Netherlands. I came across electronic music about 10 years ago I believe… and as far as I remember, it was by an accident, a quite funny one as well. I was listening to all the pop stuff that’s popping at the time, international and Arabic, really the very average listening kid. And I remember one day I opened YouTube and I started watching live performances of people I’m listening to… Adele, David Guetta and this is where it gets interesting. I remember I used to think David was a singer, I had no idea what DJing and Electronic Music is… and I watched his Tomorrowland 2010 video and I still remember that feeling until now. It was something different, some kind of a spark you know… And I remember being like I wanna do this, I don’t care how long it’ll take me and how impossible it seems, but I’m doing it.

Electronic Music in Egypt at the time was nothing compared to how it is today, and people in school were laughing and mocking me for pursuing this. Fast forward 10 years later, I’m playing at the biggest music festival of the middle east and got a charting melodic techno track. How the tables have turned…..

What is the scene in the middle east and North Africa like?

It’s growing as fast as a 2022 F1 Car (not gonna say which one but anyone who follows me knows which one I’m talking about 😊).

Jokes aside, It’s amazing seeing this rise and seeing a lot of Arab countries being landmarks for so many big DJS around the world in such a short period of time.

What does it need to improve and grow?

Electronic music, especially the more underground styles like Techno & House is all about building a community. There’s a lot of key players for this to shape up and they are slowly all coming together. We have event promoters and organizers, we have social media accounts promoting these events and the artists and we definitely have the artists. To improve, we need to focus a bit more on this aspect. I’ve seen a lot of events and lineups that are 100% regional and local and they are amazing parties. But we need more… In addition, I feel like there is a huge number of talent out there that is not being discovered. Of course, artists have to be visible and identifiable to be booked and being a profitable investment. However, it also doesn’t make sense to see the exact same few names in every single lineup in countries with a big number of active artists.

With that being said, there’s a lot of upcoming exciting stuff I heard of that we will be witnessing. Some of them are taking place already. New labels, new showcases worldwide. Instead of being only successful in importing electronic music, I really hope we become successful in exporting it as well.

How important is MDLBeast to that, the label and the festival?

It’s very very important. Not only the label and the festival, but let me add their electronic music conference MDLBEAST XP.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get to attend XP in full in 2021 as I was busy with preparing for Soundstorm. But it was an insane experience that I enjoyed so much. Not only playing there as part of the record label showcase but walking there, meeting new people who might not be from the same country but speak the same musical language. There’s always that “Ween el after?” guy which translates to “where’s the after party?”.

The label is mind blowing, and I am extremely proud to be part of it, and hope I get to be part of it for a long time. Not only we have a label in the middle east that is housing the world’s biggest DJS, but it is using that power and recognition to shine light on regional talent. The support they offered me is something else, There’s a whole experienced team that works for the release to become a success along the many partnerships this team has formed for their music and artists to shine.

The festival, oh boy…. I could take ages to describe my Soundstorm experience but to answer that question, having one of the biggest festivals in the world is a key factor to levelling up the scene in the region. I was paying a lot of attention to their comments sections actually and obviously… people were asking for the big international names, which MDLBEAST provided. However, they provided these names alongside a big number of local and regional acts in order to shine light on them and give them the same platform and stage as the biggest artists on the planet.

They are also hosting label (and sub-label) stages in some big festivals around the globe.

Sokkary · Symphony

How did you link with them for this ep?

I wish I had a fairytale of a story about how I traveled to Saudi and waited all day in the sun outside their office with a USB. But the reality is I found their head of talent and messaged him on Instagram asking for his email. I knew chances of him seeing that message in his requests is like 1%, and him responding is even less. But hey, Instagram messaging is free, what did I have to lose?

My intention in the beginning was literally only being considered for Soundstorm. I ended up being on one of the biggest stages of Soundstorm, played in XP and released a 4-track EP with them.

Boys and girls, if you’re confident that you got what it takes, shoot your shot.

And what inspired your new ep – what was in mind when you wrote it?

Actually this wasn’t meant to be an EP. I just sent the A&Rs what I had unsigned and they loved these 4 tracks and we all thought they make a nice bundle together. However, the main inspiration and theme is bringing what I have been mastering as a composer. Creating powerful, emotional melodies with emulations of real instruments like Strings and Arabic sounds like The Ney, Oud and others floating around my tracks. Combined of course with groove and energy.

How do you work, do you have an idea in your head you work towards or do you just experiment and jam and see what happens?

Most of the times it’s a melody or rhythm in my head that I translate to a track. Sometimes, I check out samples or presets and they immediately form an idea in my head to work on.

Do you think of where a tune might be played, to who, when making it?

Not always, but a lot of times yes. Hypnosis was first called “Gashouder at 3 AM”. Dark Oasis was called “Mozart in Berghain”. I probably should have kept these names and went viral.

Do you make the tunes you want to play in your own sets, is there a direct link like that?

Yes. Now I feel like I have 2 sides, a more melodic one and a darker and heavier side. So, based on where, who I’m playing to, who I’m playing before and after, I have my own Sokkary material to serve different occasions.

Are you concerned with your environmental impact as a dj, and what can you do about it if so?

Of course, even though I feel like I could read more about it and pay even more attention to it. So thank you for asking that question.

I live in The Netherlands and my way of transportation is the same as basically everyone there, biking.

Also, while yes, having pyrotechnics and fireworks part of your show is nice, looking at shows like Cercle where the main energy comes from the surrounding locations and sometimes, just nature. And I personally think this is much better than having all these pyrotechnics around. I am not exactly sure how these things work but would be nice if there is some sort of regulation around how much pyro and fireworks for example are used. That way people have fun but also within an acceptable limit.

What is next for you after this ep?

To be honest, the last couple of months were all about preparing the Symphony EP. Not only the tracks, but If the opportunity arises, which it did here, I like to get involved and help push the releases as much as I can. Whether in the form of creating and helping with artworks, getting in touch with some platforms and pages that support my music, I always try to go the extra mile for my music. Next to the EP preparations, I was very busy with all things related to my mini tour in Saudi in December. After all, I’m working alone at the moment without a manager or booking agency and so, getting these things in place take a lot of time and effort.

However, I’ve had some time to breathe a bit lately and instantly got to work. 2 faster and darker tracks are now finished (another EP maybe?) as well as starting with a project a bit on the chiller and housier side with vocals, hopefully for this summer if it’s not too late to plan. Me and the team at MDLBEAST are already in discussion for what’s next and how to follow Symphony up!

Sokkary EP “Symphony” released on MDLBEAST Records is out now
Grab it here

Follow:
https://www.facebook.com/DJSokkary
https://soundcloud.com/sokkarymusic

Mohamed El Sokkary is an Egyptian DJ/Producer born and raised in Alexandria. 2012 marks the initial inspiration of Sokkary by top DJ names, their music and performances.
