We caught up with him recently to talk about his new track “Alive” on his label, and how his 2022 has started…

Hey Mark, how are you, how has 2022 started off for you?

Heya not bad thank you very much. Well it was a difficult start to 2022 for many reasons. Took me a while to come to terms with losing my dad. Also the heavy covid infection was difficult for me. But now my energy levels are rising and I am fully focusing on new music and new projects.

Tell us about your recent “Alive” on SubVision – what is it to be alive to you?

Well after my covid infection I started numerous tunes. Trying to find that real track that defines the way I was feeling. I felt so full of energy and „Alive“ that I then named it exactly that.

What inspired or influenced it, where and when and who was it written for?

Well you could say that it was also for my father and what he would of wanted from me. Meaning be alive and go out there and make people happy. I think the track has a very happy note to it, and is enjoyable to listen to.

Where is your best environment as a dj? A small dark club or a huge outdoor festival stage? Late at night for the weirdos or early so you can play slow and eclectic etc etc?

Well I love both to be honest. That feeling when you come on stage in front of 1000s of people, but also that intimate club show where sweat drips off the ceiling.

Do you make tunes to play your own set?

Yes I do and it’s a lot of fun always testing out new things, although they are not quite finished. Love experimenting and testing different stuff. Not only driving techno but also melodic sounds.

What’s the aim with your label – why start it, why now, and what music do you look to put out?

Well the label started in 2015 and I remember Luigi Madonna doing a fantastic remix for my first release. Then followed by others like Victor Ruiz and Kevin de Vries. I am aiming at finding a path between melodic and driving techno. I want to be different.

How will you judge success, is it by sales, high profile support, or do you only care about you liking the music?

Well it has become a mixture between all of those. Running a label is a very hard thing to do. Getting it right releasing the right tunes not only on a business side, but also getting that support from high profiles. Which I suppose makes it hard for new talent because some labels only care for profit.

Tell us about the best and worst bits of running a label in 2022?

Well to be honest the paper work can be annoying. My label manager is always moaning about it. Plus a selected EP that has not done that well as expected. The best things are you can release your own music when and how you want to. Not having to ask many questions and obviously business wise a higher income on royalties when releasing your own tunes.

How important is artwork, format, merch, that sort of thing, or is it just about the music?

Very important, I look very close to the cover work for my label. It has to be raw and have something artistic to it. As soon as our new logo is born that’s when the merch will start.

How do you evolve the sound of a label while staying true to the OG sound and not jumping on new hype bandwagon?

That’s the job of a good label always adapting to new hypes but still keeping the OG vibe of the label.

What are you most proud of with the label so far?

Well I am obviously very proud of a lot of tracks from myself. But also new talent such as NoNameLeft which have been a blessing to us ! Very happy to have been working with the these two talents. Also seeing greats like Carl Cox playing things from the label is very exciting to see.

What else have you got coming up/are you working on?

Well at the moment we will have a short break. I want to really think about the next steps of the label and how we will proceed. What I can say is 2022 has been a fantastic year for us so far!

Mark Reeve single “Alive” is out now on SubVision
Grab it here

Follow:
Facebook
SoundCloud

Mark Reeve is a DJ/Producer at the forefront of the techno/melodic techno scene with releases on the likes of Drumcode, Truesoul, and his own label SubVision.
