Thanks for joining us today. How’s your summer been so far?

Thanks for having me. It’s been great! I’m enjoying the warm weather and the long days a lot, even though I spend most of the time in the studio anyway. To finish my album, I needed a lot of very long days in the studio, and the nights too 🙂 But I’m enjoying it a lot to be on tour and playing live on most weekends and making new music the days in between. That’s what I have always dreamed of.

Congrats on the release of your new single «Time Of My Life» on Boris Brejcha’s label FCKNG SERIOUS. What was your inspiration behind this track?

Thank you! The main idea of the song came together at the end of December last year, just before our little touring break started. December and the weeks before were full of massive gigs that went really well, which is why I felt very happy but also relaxed at the same time. With this feeling, I went into the studio to just play around with my synths without any specific goal. After a while, I came up with the Bassline of the song that I actually made with my Drum Machine. After that, the song came together really quickly. Actually, the vocals were the last thing that I added to the song. “Time Of My Life” was just the perfect song title because it sums up all the memories at the end of the year that I had over the past months.

«Time Of My Life» is the third single from your upcoming album which is coming later this year. Can you tell us more about the project? Sonically, what can people expect from this LP?

Doing an album felt like a logical consequence after releasing a lot of EPs and singles over the past years. I think I’m at a point where I feel confident about my sound and my music, and I really like the idea of an album. It feels like drawing a big picture of your music and yourself that you can present to the people. I made all the songs on the album during this and the past year. For me, emotions and melodies are the most important things in music. That’s what I always set my focus on. And I really like some melancholy and depth in the songs. Although I feel like I’ve found the sound that I can identify with, it can vary on some days. I think that’s also what you can notice in the album. Some songs are a little bit different from my previous releases.

What does it mean for you to release music under the wing of Boris Brejcha? How much of an influence do you think his music had on your sound?

It’s really an honor. I remember the moment years ago when I was listening to his album “Feuerfalter Part 02” when it just came out. For me, it was one of those albums where I loved every single song. So his music has influenced me nearly since I started making electronic music. I was so impressed by the way his music was so different from everyone else and stood out with its uniqueness. That’s what I also wanted my music to be. And of course, while being on tour with him, I’ve already learned so many things that have had a huge influence on me, both on stage and in the studio.

How do you define success? Is it about the numbers or is there more to it?

Let’s say everything starts in the studio. When I make music, there are a lot of moments I struggle, for instance because I can’t find the right sound, I can’t finish a song, or the mix doesn’t sound good. But after that, when you finally come up with the right melody or suddenly the mix starts to sound better and after days of working everything seems to get into the right way, these are the moments that I really enjoy and feel like success. Then, the most important thing for me is how the people react to the music when performing it live. When I notice people enjoying the music at shows and when it makes them happy and dancing, this feels like a much more succeeding thing and fulfills me the most. Way more than any streaming numbers.

What does your studio setup look like?

I like to use some hardware gear, not because of sound or anything, I just really enjoy the workflow. I love to play around with my machines to explore new sounds, and by twisting the knobs with my hands, I can get a bit away from the monitor screen. I also tend to avoid any final decisions, and the need to record the synths into audio helps me get to a result. And maybe I’m just too lazy to draw a lot of automations in the DAW, so I just record a loop over a few minutes and twist as many knobs as possible, that’s it. Then also some “happy accidents” may happen.

While working on new songs, I also really like to just throw in some drums with my Drum Machine to get some groove going while I can keep focusing on the synths and melodies. It’s just super quick. Most of the time I’m going to replace the drums with samples afterwards.

Then I’m using Logic Pro, just because meanwhile my hands know every shortcut inside out, and I can work super quick with it.

Can you mention some of the instruments and plugins that make up your trademark sound?

My absolute most favorite instrument is the Prophet 6. I use it in every song multiple times. I also really like the Elektron machines, primarily because of the smart way how their sequencer works. I use the Analog Rytm a lot and even though it’s a Drum Machine, you can get some really powerful Basslines out of it. I use the Behringer MS1 synthesizer on stage for my live performances and their Model D in the studio. Last but not least the Novation Peak.

In the computer, I do nearly all the processing like EQ, compression, and limiting with the plugins by “fabfilter”. For Delay, Panning, and Modulation effects I go with “Soundtoys”, and most of the reverb and a great sounding chorus comes from “Valhalla”. I also only use a few soft synths like the Repro and Diva by “U-he” or the Pigments by „Arturia”.

What has been your highlight gig this year so far?

I had so many amazing moments on tour this year, so I think I can’t really focus on only one gig. But earlier this year, we did the Fckng Serious North America Bus Tour. The tour started with two incredible shows in Mexico, and after that, we drove with two big nightliner buses and nearly the whole crew for 8 days through the United States and Canada with stops at the most stunning venues. That was just an incredible experience and definitely something I will never forget.

Now that «Time Of My Life» is out, what is next for Moritz Hofbauer?

The next single of the album is already in the pipeline. It’s a collaboration with the amazing singer ILAYO. I rarely do collaborations, so this is special to me. I already performed the song in my live sets a few times, and the feedback was good. Honestly, it’s one of my favorite songs from the album, so I’m really excited about this.

Last but not least, is there a message that you wish to spread to the world?

I’m just really happy to get the opportunity to do what I love – making music and sharing it with the people. So a huge thank you to everyone who listens to my music and supports me. And I’m already super excited about the feedback on the album.

Follow Moritz Hofbauer on Soundcloud | Instagram | Facebook

Mortiz Hofbauer – Time Of My Life is out now on Fckng Serious → Buy/Stream

Moritz Hofbauer, the talented artist signed to Fckng Serious, is currently experiencing an extraordinary rise in his career.
