It has hosted events all over the world and is now making its mark once more on the White Isle.

It started back in June and has world class names like Kink, DJ Holographic, Ama, Horse Meat Disco and many more playing.

It offers something truly different from the norm and this interview with Sophia Kearney reveals more insight into the operation.

https://www.heshethey.me/
https://www.instagram.com/he.she.they/

Tell us about the genesis of HE.SHE.THEY – why did you start it?

We wanted to create a party we wanted to go to, where everyone was welcome instead of after parties with our diverse group of friends being so silly and amazing but everyone arriving from 6 different gigs or club nights we were like but why can’t we all go out together and it be fun and silly and a bit naughty but also not take itself too seriously. So HE.SHE.THEY. Was born.

Who do you work with and what was the vision?

Every single major business decision is decided by myself and Steven. We are totally independently owned. We respect and value our coordinator Ashraf Ejjbair who use to gogo dance for us and the role developed as we got to know each other. All three of us are living and breathing this project. And the formal vision was of a wider intersection of people feeling more welcome In mainstream clubbing spaces on a Friday or Saturday night, giving representation at festivals to inspire attendees and give platforms for talent. about leaving some sort of legacy for things being left by us a little better than how we found them.

How long until you started making a mark do you think, until you knew you were onto something that would be as successful as it is?

Great question. On one of my more anxious perfectionist days I’d say has it even happened yet haha I can still see so many peaks to climb. However really we knew we were on to something before we even threw a party, there was just this gut feeling that I get when I know an artist or an idea has legs and Steven felt the same and the brands aesthetic came so naturally to both of us it’s all unfolded as it’s been meant to be beautiful and challenging, it’s evolved us as people. The owner of Amnesia Martin also saw this as he famously offered us a 16 week full residency when we met with him to discuss the project … .before we’d ever thrown a single event back at Amsterdam dance event 2017!! he knew what was up!!! Which is why working with him at Amnesia these last 2 years has been great and felt like the natural fit in 2022 when we felt we’d finessed things to a point that we were ready for Ibiza.

What are the brand’s values, how do you showcase them and stick to them in everything you do?

it’s a really low bar to be honest, don’t be a c*nt! respect yourself and others choices to live, present, identify, love and dress as they wish as long as they are not hurting anyone. treat others how you wish to be treated. Being an inclusive night

What are the considerations for venues you work with, how do you know they are the right allies?

It’s about passion and appetite for change. Sometimes that comes from the person being from a marginalised group or if it is a cis white straight man that their politics are aligned with ours and you can normally tell this from sitting down and having a conversation. We’ve definitely walked away from partnerships that don’t feel right when we feel someone is working with us tokenistically, we are not afraid of that if it presents itself. We’ve had the fortune of also working with some of the most passionate, empathetic people also. The conversation, work, everything should always flow really easily as what we are doing is not difficult because everyone’s on the same page, investing equal time and energy and being organised. Beautiful things can happen.

Amnesia historically had nights such as the legendary La Troya grace their dance floors and Martin Jnr has grown up in the club his dad built, surrounded by all walks of life and lots of culture changes over the years in that club. For us to throw a party that was going back to the roots of the scene that we felt had been a bit lost in some mainstream clubs and parties it felt like the right move, plus amnesia really feels like a club space you want to get down and sweaty on a musical journey, the vantage points for the dancers, the lighting rigs it’s really good. Huge props to Susana there who runs all the decor and visuals as she’s been so kind to us.

Tell us about what you have planned there for the rest of the summer?

Expect house euphoria with dirty bass and inclusive joy. In a nutshell. A fiesta for all with open minds and hearts and those looking to push the boundary of new music, artists you know and love and ones who are your new favourites in waiting. Incredible dancing and looks from the best gogo performers Ibiza has to offer and a place you can exist in an Ibiza superclub no matter your age, body shape and size, gender, sexuality or race. Some sweaty self expression and release form the shackles of your day to day life and stresses. A release.

What is a HE.SHE.THEY like for anyone who hasn’t been?

a place without prejudice to lose your inhibitions and meet like minded people you might not meet at other events. We want people to make friends at our parties and feel a sense of community. Expect great house or techno music depending on the line up and hopefully just filling that inner cup of joy a little bit. No dress codes but : experimentation. Is. Encouraged.

What else have you got coming up this summer with the brand?

We just had a stage at Secret Garden party which was so special for us and having the likes of faithless, Fabio and grooverider, mc rage, sherelle and I.Jordan playing for the brand was a huge honour.

We have 3 more amnesia shows – 25th August, 1st September, 8th September. Plus festival stages at lost village and a big festival stage at dockyard too plus planning lots of things over in America so it’s an exciting time!!! We also have a documentary coming out in the coming months about our journey so far and I’m super nervous about it but I have a feeling it’s going to change things for us and all those we seek to platform with the brand all over again. The brand and everyone involved is in a constant state of transformation and evolution and it’s beautiful to watch. I feel alive. Sometimes tired and stressed but alive. Haha

Grab your tickets for the next HE.SHE.THEY events here

HE.SHE.THEY is a collective built on core old school values of inclusivity and diversity and welcoming people of all ages, sexualities, backgrounds, religions and ability.
