With years of experience behind the decks and a residency at the renowned Palosanto events, he has honed a sound that is both deeply melodic and irresistibly groovy. Now, as he takes the next step in his artistic evolution, Temil marks a major milestone—the release of his debut track, ‘Save Me’.

In this exclusive interview with Deep House London, Temil opens up about the emotions behind his first-ever production, the creative process that shaped it, and how his experience as a DJ has influenced his approach to music-making. He also shares insights into his inspirations, the power of minimal yet impactful production, and what the future holds for his sound.

Your debut track ‘Save Me’ is finally out! How does it feel to release your first-ever production, and what does this moment mean to you?

After years of growing up in the deep house scene in Montreal and putting music on hold when I moved to New York, this moment feels incredible since I have been passionate about music and DJing since the age of 15 years old. It feels so special to share a track that I feel also suits my signature sound when DJing with the world and our Palosanto fans.

Palosanto events are known for their unique energy. How has being a resident DJ there influenced your sound and approach to production?

The countless hours interacting with our crowd helped me refine not only my own sound but also helped me identify how to build the dancefloor’s energy through a track, using a mixture of dynamic evolution with some repetitive elements to set a vibe.

Your track is described as having a deep, groovy rhythm with a hypnotic vocal. Can you take us through your creative process in crafting this track?

It all started with the chords that I heavily layered using different instruments and just felt made a really emotional base. However, I still wanted the track to have a groovy afro house vibe that would make people want to dance, so I added a lot of percussive elements and that iconic whoop sound that I have used in other tracks and is a part of my sound as a DJ.

The vocal hook is haunting and mantra-like—what inspired this choice, and how important do you think vocals are setting a mood?

Vocals are so important for the crowd to feel attachment to a track – the ability for people to sing along and know the lyrics to something always brings things to the next level. With this track, I felt like the vocal was repetitive enough with some variation to make people sing along even on their first listen.

Minimal yet impactful production seems to be a key part of your style. How do you balance simplicity with maintaining a captivating flow?

I’ve always been a minimalist at heart, preferring well-chosen nice samples for, let’s say, percussion rather than something overly layered or engineered. I believe the quality comes from being more thoughtful with composition and picking sounds rather than obsessing over technicalities.

As a DJ, you’re an expert at reading the crowd. Did that experience shape how you
structured this track to build energy gradually?

Yes, definitely, and I had an energy-building vibe in mind for this track from the beginning. I can already imagine myself playing this at our summer rooftop events as the sun sets over the NYC skyline, the energy builds, and people start getting loose on the dancefloor.

Palosanto has been instrumental in supporting your journey. How has the label and its community helped you grow as an artist?

Oktave and Palosanto helped me so much in developing my career as an artist, guiding me to prioritize the right things and focusing on playing events that would propel my career forward. I got back into music in 2023 and it feels like no time has been wasted, and I am looking forward to continuing to help the brand reach new heights!

This is just the beginning of your production career—what kind of sounds and directions do you see yourself exploring in future releases?

My inspirations are very wide ranging as I have been listening to electronic music for about 15 years now, but I think at the core, my sound will always remain melodic with an aspect of rhythm and deep basslines, since that is always what made me tick the most.

What artists or influences have shaped your sound, both as a DJ and now as a producer?

A formative era for me was the deep house scene between 2011 to 2014, being particularly inspired by labels like Life and Death, Visionquest, Crosstown Rebels and No. 19. More recently in afro house, I would say my inspiration comes from the sound out of Belgium, most specifically Magnifik records. Moblack records also continues to be #1 in the scene in my mind.

For those who haven’t yet heard your debut track, what do you hope they experience when they press play for the first time?

I hope they feel the sort of relaxed melancholy that I think the track gives off, but that they want to get up and dance by the time the drop hits!

Temil “Save Me” is out now via Palosanto
Grab it here

Connect with Temil: https://www.instagram.com/temil_music/

Emerging from the vibrant deep house scene of Montreal and finding his footing in New York, Temil is an artist whose journey has been fueled by an undeniable passion for music and DJing.
