With years of experience behind the decks and a deep-rooted passion for electronic music, they’ve built a signature sound that blends house music with real instrumentation and raw energy. Now, as they gear up to release their highly anticipated album, The Sun, we dive into their journey—from small-town DJs to producers shaping their own path in the scene.

Hey guys! Great to meet you 🙂 How did you guys first meet, and when?

Hello friends, nice to meet you, the pleasure is ours. The truth is that we’ve known each other all our lives, we live in a small town of 3,000 inhabitants in the south of Spain in Extremadura, and everyone knows each other, but we started being friends years ago thanks to music. We have both been local DJs and have shared parties and events together.

Why did you start making music together? Why does it work?

Well, we have been commercial music DJs, but we’ve always been lovers of electronic music. We never dared to take the step before, but everything started when we met another very well-known and relevant artist in the scene, his name is Wade. This happened years ago, but we met him, became great friends, and he explained to us that he produced his music with a computer. We were fascinated by what he told us, and we started producing electronic music on our own.

However, we soon realized that it was pointless to work separately since we both have the same tastes, ideas, and goals… we thought that two heads would work better than one, and we’d be twice as demanding. As for why our music works, maybe that’s a question more for our listeners or those who are into our sound than for us. Honestly, we don’t know, but we do know all the styles very well, what people like, and we try to make different and evolving music so we don’t get boring.

Who does what, do you each have different skills that you bring? How do you settle creative disputes?

We both produce and work on all our tracks; there isn’t a single track that hasn’t had work from both of us. We also need to both agree and have each other’s approval before releasing anything. Although sometimes, depending on the project, one of us might spend more time than the other based on motivation or interest in that specific work. While Victor really enjoys coming up with ideas quickly and being creative, Jesús prefers the structural work and mixing. In terms of production, when it comes to the ‘Disaia’ brand, Victor is more in charge of the music selection for the sets, downloading, and staying up to date with new music, as well as listening to all the promos we get from other artists and labels.

Jesús, on the other hand, takes care of the social media, emails, contracts, and all the other work platforms. However, just like with production, we don’t post anything on social media unless it’s approved by both of us, and we don’t download or play music that we don’t both like. As for how we resolve conflicts, we have to be honest, haha, and the truth is that we rarely have any significant conflicts. Although we are very different people, we are quite similar in many ways, and it’s rare for us to argue. Sometimes we don’t agree on everything, but we talk about it and try to convince each other. In the end, we both understand that we want the best for ‘Disaia.’

What about when you dj, do you do one each back to back or? Is there a competitive edge to it?

Well, the truth is that nowadays it’s really hard to just be a DJ. In our case, you have to be a DJ, producer, artist, and also work as a manager, booker, marketing, and a long etc… haha.

This is our reality, but we’re very happy to be able to do our work, and proud of every step we take. We keep learning and gaining experience, as well as slowly understanding how this world works. And yes, there are many advantages and disadvantages in this world, it depends a lot on the artist you are and especially on the team you have by your side. That’s why we believe that all the solo work we’ve done over these years makes us very competent artists, but always with our feet on the ground, ready to keep growing, learning, and listening to people from the industry who have more experience than us.

Why did you decide to do a new album? What was the catalyst?

We’ve always wanted to release an album with a lot of our music. We are two people who find it relatively easy to produce a lot of music, but all the record labels and people in the industry advise against making an album, and it makes complete sense. It’s much better to EP, release individual tracks and singles, since a lot of music won’t get the attention it deserves. But in this case, we wanted to make an album for personal reasons, for the love of the art, not for the repercussions. It was an artistic decision.

The turning point was that we didn’t know what to produce at that stage, or which direction to take musically. We spoke with many colleagues, labels, agencies… everyone had a different vision, and each one told us what direction we should take and what kind of music we should produce. We were stuck for a long time, not knowing what to do. We often asked ourselves whether we should leave Tech House for other styles that are more in fashion right now, or try something more underground and dark, experiment with new styles. But our biggest flaw is also our greatest strength: we love all the styles related to House music. We are music lovers, and we can’t make two tracks that are the same or similar… which, according to the industry, is counterproductive, because they can’t put us in a box, and that just added pressure to the situation. So that’s when we said, let’s forget about everything, let’s just make music, whatever we feel, and release it, regardless of everything else… and that’s exactly what we did.

Moon Harbour · Moon Harbour Radio: Disaia – 23 April 2022

How did you approach it, were all the tracks written in a few quick sessions or?

Well, as hard as it is to believe, the creative process lasted 4 days, hahaha. We were with our friend and partner Adnor, who is the singer behind this album and this story. Adnor is a true musician and adapted to us very easily. We spent day and night with him in the studio, listening to music, gathering ideas, and improvising…

Obviously, during those 4 days, many ideas were discarded, and in the end, we picked only 8 tracks from everything we had. After those 4 days locked in the studio, full of inspiration, the real hard work began, which was shaping everything, re-recording it, editing the lyrics, making different versions, mixing it again and again…and it was tough because we had to meet up the three of us again to re-record it professionally and not just like a demo, something that was almost impossible to do again, and even harder to find the motivation to work on that music. This led to over a year and months of work.

What inspired or influenced it? And other albums you have loved over the years?

Our source of inspiration was making House music with real instruments, being able to work with a singer, using their voice as a guide and a bridge to all the ideas. Having a vocalist really helps the creative process because you don’t need to spend hours searching through libraries for vocals that might fit or work well with the track. Here, you just try, follow the rhythm, play, and everything flows… Also, when we got stuck, we would stop and listen to old music we had lost on the computer, but not just House music, we’d explore all the genres that came to mind—Hip Hop, Break Beat, Electro House, soundtracks… everything.

We’d look for videos or natural sounds on YouTube, and even people who make weird sounds with their mouths. And of course, we’d listen to other artists who guide us, like “Armand Van Helden, LF SYSTEM, Kolter, Mason Collective,” to name a few. We can’t point to a specific album that has influenced or inspired us throughout history, because there are very few House albums, and the most influential tracks for us have been singles. But I can mention that right now, the album “The Reset” by Anotr is a great piece of work and a source of motivation—something that’s not often seen, different, risky, and full of feelings.

You can feel the love and passion behind that work. We’ve read some interviews about their creative process, and we felt a bit identified with them.

How hard is it to make sure it flows and is more than just a collection of tracks?

Very difficult, in fact, it’s a risk you take. You never know how it’s going to turn out, but even if it doesn’t work and doesn’t have success, it can still be a collection of tracks in a hidden folder on your computer, or it can be a collection of tracks available for everyone to listen to. We chose the second option, and we hope some people connect with The Sun.

What is next for you now the album is done?

We don’t know. We have a lot of music made and ready to release, but we believe the smartest thing is to pause and give the album some space for a long time. We want to see how it performs, what people liked and what they didn’t… and then feel what we’re in the mood for after this work.

Disaia’s “The Sun” is out on 11th April on Siena, and is the first single of the upcoming LP
Grab it here

Follow:
SoundCloud
Instagram

Introducing Disaia—the dynamic DJ and production duo hailing from a small town in Extremadura, Spain.
