For regular people Bristol is just a city in the UK, but for an electronic music enthusiast, Bristol comes as a splash of color in the contemporary music scenery. That unique splash took many shapes and sizes and ultimately left its mark. No, we’re not talking about a sort of pill or weed. In fact it’s a club night which over the course of 9 years flourished into a globally renowned brand. With events in places such as Space Ibiza, the Garage, Eastern Electrics Festival, Off Sonar and much more. With a reach that makes many of today’s labels quite bitter, Just Jack released their first music output in the form of Just Jack Recordings. Their first chosen caballeros go by the name of Beesmunt Soundsystem.
The two gentlemen from Amsterdam have quite a story behind them, they started DJing together in 2008 and released their first EP onto Soweso Records a few years later, entitled Circulation EP. It was the duo’s first time where they showcased their massively bass-infused combination of house & techno.
The Baby Maker EP on Just Jack Recordings continues to articulate their love for that rugged techno/house sound. Although at first sight, the three tracks of the EP come on a bit heavy, but in fact they underline a distinctive hint that blends so well with that characteristically gruesome 4/4.
“Close To Me” is a 100% rugged track that surfaces above the border between house and techno. Seems to be a legit summary, right? A bass chord that surpasses the tracks limit, open high hats, a repetitive vocal sample and that’s that. But its addictive simplicity adds that extra flavour to the sound. The duo highlights a groove that’s rarely seen or heard today. Its swing appears to take you back into a place in time when all you could do was to snap your fingers and dance along.
On the other hand, “How I Wish” takes a different turn on the cut. It melds together the duo’s distinctive sound, while at the same time adding those ever ear-pleasing piano chords that remind you of some long-forgotten Chicago gem. End-to-end with a soulful vocal hook, the track parallels two universes where the track solely ties a powerful bond between apparent contrasts.
On the flip there’s a remix of Close To Me by Amir Alexander where he takes the track onto a different setting, a darker place of sound, an excursion led by a gloomy, wobbling bass.
The two originals on the Baby Maker EP are the perfect advocates of Beesmunt’s capabilities. One can immediately hear that they have harnessed their very own sound and don’t give give a damn on what’s hot at the moment. But as the buzz is already starting to grow and because of the EP entering the beatport charts witihin a day, these dudes have stipulated their own definition of what’s hot right now. Be prepared to hear these tracks at clubs and festivals for a long time to come.
Beesmunt soundsystem is performing together with Cinnaman at Chicago Social Club tomorrow night which is a nice alternative to the Lente Kabinet after party.
