On Saturday 21st of July the 99th edition of Nijmegen’s celebrated 4-Day Marches, or as it’s popularly called ‘The Longest March In The World’, will kick off, with a 40.000 strong crowd of nature and walking enthusiasts expected to hit Holland’s oldest city.  More famous than the marches, however, are the evening- and nighttime festivities scattered across town during Nijmegen’s favourite week of the year. Local event crew Subcultuur are hosting three different events through the week at the city’s  key music and arts venue Lindenberg, each starring a celebrated international act as its headliner, including MK, Skream and Noir.

Subcultuur NMGN started out in 2013 with the goal in mind to bring the underground house sound to Nijmegen, a town previously known for being predominantly techno-minded. In the following years they would invite artists such as Ame, Huxley, Paranoid London, Ejeca, Edu Imbernon, Amine Edge & Dance, Adriatique, Sidney Charles, Tom Trago, Waze & Odyssey, Will Saul, Gerd, Tom Demac and Vaal. After making their name known locally through various successful solo events, most notably at Nijmegen’s pop altar Doornroosje, the crew also landed stages at big productions. Just recently they had their own stage at All We Want Festival.

Starting this Saturday, July 18, Subwalk will host their first event out of three, with Noir spearheading the party, together with proper ‘Nijmegenaar’ Timothy Fall as the supporting act. The second room will be curated by Subcultuur nightpartner for that night, Stamp-Pot, who bring along artists like techno duo TWR72.

On July 21 numero dos in Subcultuur’s event trio will be led by the impeccable master of the decks, Skream. The Londoner will play an extensive 3 hour set, so expect to be spoiled with adrenaline-filled mixes, and history lessons on various styles the party instigator has succesfully embraced after dropping the Dubstep scene that he himself helped to create. Warming up the place will be in the more than qualified hands of Reza Athar, the Dutch-Iranian DJ who is making big waves across the country through his distinctive and boundary-breaking musical escapades behind the decks, ranging from disco, to bass-infused italo, to sweaty, hypnotizing new wave. The below mix is a good example of his capabilities. On top of that, Nightpartner Couture is also featuring Young Marco on the bill. The afrobeat enthusiast and Boiler Room regular, deemed one of the most gifted Dutch selectors known today, will get everybody in an ecstatic state of mind through an outlandish focus on Afro, Balearic, poppy Italo and more. The musical support will be given by locals Thomas Elmore and Emilio Bestevez.

To wrap up the four-day marches in Nijmegen, Subcultuur throws its closing event on Thursday, 23th of July, sporting a producer who would befit the term legend effortlessly: mr. Mark Kinchen, or MK. A Detroiter who was picked up in the early 90s by Derrick May and Saunderson for his talent to cook up dance floor fillers (long, long before his global monster hit Look Right Through in 2013). Darko Esser is billed to balance out MK’s classic sound and vocal practices  with some serious analog work, with support by Forrest Funk.

No doubt that those tired walking feet will have little time to rest next week with Subwalk around the corner.
