We round up our winter festival highlights amongst the International dance music scene in 2015/2016.
#10 Wonderfruit | 19-21 December | Chonburi, Thailand
Being an relatively untapped market for house music, the far East by definition are not expected to be massive in house festivals. One interesting finding is Wonderfruit festival, which is actually a recent Thai entry on the music festival scene. Landing a wide range of artists from electronic acts to house, this year the line up fills up with coming big dance music artists from India, China, Japan, Philippines and the West, such as The IY_Project of Jon Hopkins. The festival also supports sustainability and arts within the community of Thailand. One thing is certain, the weather in Chonburi in December should be a cut above that in Amsterdam.
Line up | Jon Hopkins x Chris Levine present the iy_project | The Faint | The Submotion Orchestra | Howie B | Dapayk Solo | Desktop Error | Mahajamreon | Polycat etc.
#09 Valhalla | 19th of December | Amsterdam, the Netherlands
Merge the beats of Maya Jane Coles, Seth Troxler or Oliver Koletzki with a vision of people dressed as monkeys, acrobats and fire spitting fakirs and you’ll get a scene from Valhalla. An Amsterdam based festival where modern nightlife merges with classical circus to burst an exhilarating effect. A pure winter extravaganza with a crackin’ line-up. Another year packed to the rafters with household and international names this dutch one-day festival is sure to raise the roof off the Amsterdam Rai like no other.
Line up | De Sluwe Vos | Detroit Swindle | Maya Jane Coles | Seth Troxler | Waze & Odyssey | Oliver Koletzki | Olivier Weiterb2b Miss Melera | Adana Twins | Andhim | Gaiser (live) | Joris Voorn | Hannah Wants etc.
#08 Polaris | 11- 12 December | Verbier, Switzerland
There is a certain miraculousness when Laurent Garnier is close to his home. With just a few, but the definate creme de la creme, Polaris launches its first year in the Swiss ski resort. Located 2200 metres up a mountain, with panoramic views of the Swiss Alps, the festival roles over two days. Limited to only a handful of 1,000 people, dancing under a crystal dome in the Swiss Alps, this sounds like house music goes James Bond.
Line up | Laurent Garnier | Luciano | Seth Troxler | Carl Craig feat. Mad Mike Banks | Andrea Oliva | Mirko Loko | Adolpho & Franky etc.
#07 Airwaves | 4-8 November | Reykjavik, Iceland
The crazy Icelander with their crazy festival, an experience as weird and fun as only Iceland can offer. Few events capture the zeitgeist of modern music as well as Iceland Airwaves. With as many as 12 different events every night for four days, the Reykjavik festival is equal parts pop, indie, electronic and avant-garde. The lineup count more than 100 acts from all over the range. Björk and Gus Gus topping a sizable cast of local artists, who is quite a commodity for the islanders, since ask anyone from there, everyone’s is someone’s neighbour.
#06 Winter Social | 6 February | Kent Country Showground, UK
Following on from the sell out summer Social, Nic Fanciulli’s Social brand returns with an all star line up for its Winter Edition on the 6th of February 2016.
