Victor Ezcurdia is one of the best known and respected DJ ́s in the electronic music scene in Mexico and is now consolidating a very important name worldwide. With more than 100 shows outside of his country, Vazik has broken frontiers with his music and sets. From Berlin to Sao Paulo, from Ibiza to San Francisco, his name has reached countless clubs and festivals. We caught up with him recently to talk about how 2022 has been for him, and his recent “Proceso Cerebral” EP on his label Sounds Of Earth.

Hey Vazik, how has 2022 been for you? What was the highlight?

2022 was a very good year, the calendar was super busy and as a DJ for 25 years this is pure oxygen. Beside my gigs in Mexico I had very good weeks in Berlin, Guatemala and I am playing in a few days in Costa Rica… My highlight was an incredible night at Sisyphos in the summer, I rocked the main floor for 4 hours. The dance-floor was full and the energy was from another planet.

Tell us about your journey into dance music, when did you first fall in love with it?

I´ve been into music since I was a kid, I was playing the guitar since I was 11, then I played in heavy metal bands and it was until 1994 that I met I went to a rave and I fell in love with electronic music.

And when did you start making it, what sounds and DJs and labels and parties inspired you?

I started DJing in 1997 and my first gig was in 1998. It wasn’t until 2001 that I started producing music. As a DJ I was very inspired by Sasha & John Digweed, they were a big influence. Regarding music, I loved many styles, from the psychedelic progressive tunes from Flying Rhino to Daftpunk or Chemical Brothers.

And what is your own sound, what makes your music unique?

The “Vazik” sound is a mix of styles, there is definitely techno, progressive house and a pinch of psychedelic vibes.

Do you make the tunes you want to play in your own sets, is there a direct link like that?

I would say that I produce the music that I like and luckily that music also fits into my sets hehe.

Tell us about the new EP on your label Sounds of Earth – what inspired it it?

The track “Proceso Cerebral” was inspired by the Mexican scientific Jacobo Grinberg and his work with shamans, telepathy, etc. I sampled his voice where he explains the power of a well known Mexican shaman named Pachita. “More than ever” goes in a different direction, more melodic and surrounded by a hopeful feeling.

What gear did you use to make it and does that matter?

I am a fan of Cubase, I’ve used it for many years. I mostly use plug ins, I love the ones from UAD. But many of my special sounds come from the Virus Snow.

What goals do you have for 2023?

To continue expanding my international career and release on a couple of labels that I am keen for.

What is the most important lesson you have learnt in your career so far?

Perseverance is the key to success.

What else are you working on right now?

I have an EP coming on Subios Records in January 2023 and I’m working on new tracks that I feel could fit on some cool labels as well.
