Every summer many a weekend is spent somewhere in a field around Europe dancing to music without a care in a world, but it’s only more recently that this idea has now transpired to the winter months. With new festivals popping up seemingly everywhere, we take a closer look and focus on the main ones to be seen out and about at over the next few months.
December 13-20, 2014. Les 2 Alpes Resort, FR
In its debut year, Rise is situated in the Les 2 Alpes and is home to the largest ski-able glacier in Europe. With a banging line-up consisting of UK hard-hitter Jackmaster, legendary Garage blaster DJ EZ and woman of the moment Hannah Wants plus more, this promises to be a party to warm the cockles of the most house hungry hedonists. Throw in a flat fee package that consists of six days accommodation, a six-day ski pass and coach travel there and back and you have an offer too good to turn down!
December 20, 2014. RAI, Amsterdam, NL
Entering its third year, this festival combines circus and carnival to exhilarating effect. A festival that makes the extraordinary seem normal and has a line-up this year packed to the rafters with household names. The Martinez Brothers, Hot Since 82, KiNK, and UK techno don Boddika are just a few as well as local favourite Joris Voorn taking centre stage, this one-day festival is sure to raise the roof off the Amsterdam Rai like no other.
I Love Techno
November 8, 2014. Flanders Expo, Ghent, BE
A mainstay festival now in its 19th year, this techno tornado of music sells out every year to a crowd pushing 35,000 and has a line-up that befits its reputation. Held in Flanders Expo in Ghent Belgium, any lineup consisting of techno wizard Jeff Mills and mercurial marvel Loco Dice amongst many, many more is always worth its weight in gold on the techno scene and this year promises to be no different.
December 6, 2014. Jaarbeurs, Utrecht, NL
Time Warp festival is always epic but this being their 20th edition expect something extra special this winter. A line-up with names like Sven Vath, Ricardo Villalobos, Maya Jane Coles and Monika Kruse is not to be sniffed out and with production and visuals always top notch, it makes for one party you don’t want to be missing out on.
October 25-November 1. TBA, Torino, IT
Now in its ninth year, this European cousin to Detroit’s techno fest has more than held its own over that time and this years week-long party has sets from Kerri Chandler, Moodymann and Skream plus an endless list of other big players in the dance music world. Set in an old Fiat factory, the gargantuan venue itself is worth checking out alone, but add in an army of techno-crazed Italians and you have an atmosphere that will stand toe to toe with any competitors.
Bugged Out Weekender
January 16-18. Butlins Bognor Regis, UK
The fourth edition of popular BOW and they are back at Butlins Holiday Park after relocating to Southport in the north of England last year. This promises to be three days of non-stop entertainment with pool parties through the day and huge auditoriums as rave rooms at night. Add in fantastic accommodation, superb restaurants and a line-up with names like Todd Terje, Tiga and Four Tet and it’s plain to see why this is the weekend most choose to usher away those post-Christmas blues.
