Night Stories are a Spanish duo based in Madrid who have been at the forefront with their OpenGate Society events over there. With them now starting a label arm of the same name, we caught up with them around the release of their first EP on the label to talk about how it came about…

Hey guys, great to meet you both! How are you, what’s good and bad in your world?

Hi! Nice to speak with you guys and thank you for having us here 🙂 All is fine in our world now, thank God. We are super busy these days with the start up of the new label, the organisation of our OpenGate Society Events in Madrid, and preparing our performances… lots of things to do everyday but things that we love and keeps us happy.

What was it like to get back to partying and DJing again after the pandemic?

Well, it was incredible to come back to the stage and clubbing, as it’s something that gives you back the energy you invest in the studio, preparing the performances, the new tracks and so on. We think that without that, without the feedback from the crowd, our work has no sense, as it’s for them we are creating everything. We love to do music as a way of life, but in the end everything is destined for them.

What’s the aim with your label Opengate Society – what music do you look to put out?

OpenGate Society it’s a platform to put out music that we like, and it’s a platform to collaborate with artists and a home for those artists we like and respect.

We love all types of electronic music, but the label will be focused on the most melodic and ethereal generes of techno. Our sound as producers and performances moves from dark techno to the most melodic branch of house and techno, so our goal is to have no tags on the music we release, but to find a good mixture between energy and mind-blowing melodies and sensations.

How will it relate to the events you do under the same name?

Well, they are directly linked, as we think that they both are equally important to the brand. The events that we are doing nowadays in Madrid are super important to give weight to the label, and we know that if we do things right, the label will open new doors to our events. So we’ll give all the attention and love to both parts in order to create a recognisable international brand. We know that it will take time and tons of work, but we are committed to this, and we’ll do everything that’s in our hands in order to have OpenGate Society everywhere possible.

How will you judge success, is it by sales, high profile support, or do you only care about you liking the music?

Success is not a matter of numbers, but of course numbers are important, don’t get us wrong. We are going more for the impact, we want to do things in a different way. Of course we are not going to create something completely new, but we want to give a spin to what is out there in order to have our own character and place.

To us the most important thing here is the music and how we present it in our events (the ones we are doing in Madrid and our performances), where we take all details in to account to bring a great experience to the listener, to the DJ’s who support our tracks, or the to dancers in the crowd.

How important is artwork, format, merch, that sort of thing, or is it just about the music?

Again, everything is important, all details will add or take out something to the final product so if you want to create a brand, marketing, merch, format and quality are always important and keys to success in reaching our goals. This is why we have a great team working on this not just doing great covers or flyers, but great content for social media and so on. Of course music is the core of everything here, but when you do things with love, you take good care about all the minor details in order to create something special and well-rounded. Then things tend to go a step further.

How do you evolve the sound of a label while staying true to the original sound and not jumping on new hype bandwagons?

We don’t know which will be the next big thing, but we know what we like and I’m pretty sure we won’t be moving very far from what we have in mind right now. Finding a great mixture of dark and energetic dance music that will touch you when you close your eyes.

What else have you got coming up/are you working on?

We have many gigs and references coming up in the near future, and of course we will continue with our monthly events here in Madrid. We are also working pretty hard on our live set as we would love to make something really special in 2022 with our own productions.

What hopes and dreams do you have for 2022?

We have many plans and things to come during 2022, but for now we’ll keep them to ourselves because we don’t want to loose the WOW effect when they are announced. 😉
