Under this moniker, the profile pairing have been delivering a run of underground hits, supported by taste makers and DJ’s in the know. We talked to them recently to hear about their new “Happiness” Edits EP
How are you, what’s good and bad in your world?
We are really great thank you. Melbourne is finally coming out of the worlds longest lockdown, yay! Lockdown hasn’t been ideal but the good side is it’s given us more time to work on music. Clubs & festivals will open soon and we can finally get out and celebrate.
Tell us about your new one on Vicious Recordings “Happiness” – where and when was it written, what was the inspiration?
It’s actually an update of a release from the Pointer Sisters from 1979. We always loved the original and wanted to update it for 2021. We started working on it, then found out we know the manager of Sadako Pointer! He asked her if she wanted to be involved, she said yes and here we are.
What must you consider when tackling a big tune like this and updating it?
I think the most important thing is to ensure any new version honours the original, and has great energy and emotion that connects to the awesome vocals and message of the track.
What gear do you use in the studio make your music and does that matter to you?
It was made in our SDC Studios. We have everything from classic Roland gear like 909s and Jupiters 106s, to virtually every new software instrument there is. Our DAW of choice is Ableton Live. All of this is vital to the music making process.
Why did the original appeal so much, what makes it special?
After the last two years of Covid with so many people locked down not connecting with family and friends we loved the message of Happiness and it’s super positive feeling.
Do you make the tunes you want to play in your own sets, is there a direct link like that?
Yes, 100%. We make a lot of bootlegs and original tracks that we play in livestreams and soon will finally be able to play at festivals and clubs.
What last made you happy and why?
Sitting down in a park having a picnic with friends. We haven’t been allowed to do that for so long, so with restrictions easing, it’s the little things that make us happy.
What makes you unhappy and how do you get over it?
Negative people. We consider ourselves pretty positive people and it can be hard when your not in the right frame of mind to handle that energy. We pick ourselves up by dancing, laughing and doing anything that makes us feel better.
The tune has had huge support from the likes of Carl Cox, what does that mean to you?
It means a huge amount to us. People like Carl Cox and Roger Sanchez who have supported the track have always been a huge inspiration to us so it feels good to get their approval.
What else have you got coming up/are you working on?
We have a lot of tracks and demos that we worked on the last two years through six lockdowns. Also a bunch of Remixes, including one just released for Dubbel Drop called “Ecstacy” and a new remix for Soul Central due later in the year.
We also have been working super hard building our TikTok channel, which is so much fun.
