A pioneer of the NYC, New Jersey, 90’s house sound, Jovonn exploded onto the House scene in 1991 with his second release ‘Turn and Runaway’.
Additionally, Jovonn has produced classics like ‘Back In the Dark’, ‘Garage Shelter’, ‘I Can’t Make Up My Mind’, ‘I Wanna Go To A Club’ that all contain his distinctive vocal delivery and trademark production of gritty sounds, hard kicks, jazzy chords, and phat basslines. Recently his work has been heard on labels like Clone, Dogmatik, Objektivity, Deeply Rooted House and Apollonia, showcasing his talents to a new audience of House Music lovers.
Earlier this year, Jovonn launched his new label, Body N’Deep, via Clone Distribution, with the intention of releasing the rawest underground house tracks from himself and his crew of producers and vocalists. Now, he returns to Body N’Deep label to release the album “Timeless”, his first since 2009. Focused on the deeper side of House and featuring Jovonn’s trademark New Jersey sound, the album is available 24 September. Here, anticipating it all, Jovonn goes deep into the record back to discuss 10 of the most seminal New York City area tracks.
BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE – BARBARA TUCKER
It’s one for the tracks I play often because its spiritual and inspirational you can feel the music. You can feel the song its certified classic and timeless.
ATMOSPHERE – KERRI CHANDLER
It’s the roots of deep house, thunderous kick rough bassline and chunky repetitive stabby chords is crazy, which I keep in my set.
BACK IN THE DARK – JOVONN
Was my story about New York house music, it gave you a vision of my experience, a dark room, a smoky atmosphere and a crowded dance floor. You can see and feel that what I was conveying to you, this happens in every club in the world not just New York or New Jersey.
WAY BACK – SEAN McCABE
Is known for his jazzy chords which I’m nuts over! His production and feel good vibe always takes me there when ever I play this track. It’s amazing!
MONO GROSSO – MAW
Is the New York anthem & signature of what real house music is known for. The hype and uplifting groove is one I like to play on a Jovonn journey.
LUV DANCIN – ROGER. S
Fucks my head up every time I play it til this day. Or if I hear another DJ drop it, it puts me in the zone. An early, true and timeless deep house track.
JON CUTLER – HARMONICA WALK
Is one of them tracks I feel that’s so well produced. I used to open my set with it to put me a certain mood and direction on where I’m going take the crowd.
CIRCLE DANCE – JOVONN
Was a ground- breaking New York anthem. It was my late 90s Afro Beat track that I felt needed a Jovonn running bassline of hard beats and an ass kickin’ snare beating the crap outta you like a runaway criminal lol. It was also a huge anthem at Timmy Regisford’s club Shelter.
ALRIGHT – ROLAND CLARK
I have a personal memory of when that song came out, I was in the studio just hanging out with Roland Clark, who was an intern at Calliope Studio NYC. He was in the middle of this track making a demo which was the song called ‘Alright” and asked me what do i think of it, and I said it was really dope and asked can I have a tape of it and he gave it to me. Before I knew it, it was on the radio mix show with Tony Humphries. Needless to say I was there when it was being created, love the entire production.
FIVE -OH- FANTASY
This is my favourite Kenny Dope track and always kills on the dance floor. And Kenny Dope is one of my favourite producers!
“Timeless” is available 24 September on Body N’Deep PRE ORDER
