After a successful debut release on Sapiens, French Music Producer, and Multi-Instrumentalist Roman Kyn returns to the label with his highly anticipated EP “High In The Sun”. This release is truly an accurate representation of his very own signature sound – a special blend of dance floor tracks mixed with indie-inspired storytelling and thrilling vocals. He is an artist whose music is grounded by an underlying ethos to combine the worlds of indie and techno. Roman’s sound marries a steady rhythmic ritual with a rich melodic journey. A strong aesthetic was injected into his live performance, combining live instrumental improvisation and the manipulation of modern machines.
We caught up with Roman Kyn to talk about his new EP “High In The Sun” on Sapiens.
Hi Roman! It’s a pleasure to have you here with us. What have you been up to lately?
Happy to answer a few questions for you, thank you for the support! I have been making a lot of music, working on my live show, and playing in some amazing places!
Congrats on your latest «High In The Sun» EP on Agoria’s Sapiens imprint. What was your inspiration behind this EP?
The idea for this EP was to try to catch each of my main inspirations in terms of music genres and emphasize these inspirations for each of the tracks of the EP: indie rock, 80s synth tracks, and melodic techno. I really tried to offer something different with each of the tracks, it was important for me to achieve a balance between the tracks of the EP, while the main title “High in the sun” would represent the ultimate “blend” between the genres. Another source of inspiration was that I set a rule for the EP: only use my Moog synthesizer to make the leads of the tracks, to try to get the most out of it in a creative way.
How did you first get into music production and songwriting?
I started out with a previous musical project that was more oriented toward slower music. I have a strong musical background from when I was young, I always played lots of instruments and started singing and composing music when I was 13 years old.
What are some major musical influences you believe have shaped your sound?
My major influences are a blend of what I listened to throughout the times I learned how to play and produce music. It started with Radiohead, Pink Floyd, and other indie rock bands and drifted towards a mix of genres with groups like Weval, Bob Moses, or WhoMadeWho. The early beginnings of Melodic techno have also played a big role in how my sound is today.
What does your live setup look like?
Everything is centralized in Ableton live. I can play songs in any particular order, and I bring my guitar with lots of FX on stage, my microphone, and a small synthesizer. This allows me to improvise some parts if I want to.
Can you mention some of the instruments ( digital or analog ) that you believe define your sound?
For the analog synths, I use the Moog grandmother and the Sequential Prophet 6 a lot. I also love using VSTs, particularly the Arturia V collection suite that offers tons of possibilities to be explored, which gives the endless feeling of never being bored.
What has been your highlight gig this year?
My highlight gig of this year was Rituel Recordings. It is a festival where I have been playing for many years under my previous project, and it was my second time as Roman Kyn. It was the last edition of the festival and the response of the crowd was just incredible, it truly was a beautiful moment.
What can we expect from Roman Kyn in the near future?
I’m super excited to release new music in the near future, starting with my “High in the Sun” EP on Agoria’s label Sapiens. It feels good for me to follow up on my first release on this label as this is where everything started for this project! I then have other wonderful releases and collaborations with amazing artists, can’t really say more for now! I’ll be also playing many exciting live shows worldwide in the upcoming months and can’t wait to perform in the UK, Switzerland, Mexico, Morocco, Cyprus & Germany.
Thanks a lot for taking the time to answer our questions, is there anything else you would like to mention before we go?
Glad to have discussed this with you and looking forward to showing my live set and sharing my music with as many people as possible all around the world!
