At only 21 years old, Dutchman Marc Holstege delivers a unique and mellow sound well beyond his years.
Gaining a love for the underground following an immersion in music from a young age, Marc set out curating his own mixtapes which were quickly sought after, leading to performances at local events like Valhalla, Pleinvrees, Verknipt, Amsterdam Open Air, as well as big stages like the Paradiso and Tivoli Vredenburg.
Now, as 2017 rolls on, and releases on Stil vor Talent, as well as major festival appearances are on the horizon, Marc Holstege stops by our mix series. Also, check out a bit of insight into the mind of a local artist as Marc was kind enough to answer a few questions on his creative process.
Can you describe a bit about your approach to constructing this mix?
Well, as you’d might guess I started with listening to a lot of music. I wanted to tell a story with my mix. A story that brings you along a journey for 1,5 hours. I do that by starting quietly, creating atmosphere and expanding on with more melodies and thereby gaining more depth. This is what I keep in mind with selecting the tracks.
How does this relate to constructing a live DJ set?
During my DJ sets I always select the tracks on the spot. Obviously every performance is a different one and I would like to be flexible to adjust to that in every situation. Also it’s depending on the time slot of course and how people react to the records I play. I tried to find a difference between the music in my sets and the mixes so that so they can see the diversity and that the podcast/mixes have a more easy listing and deeper angle.
Over the last 12 months, what has been a particular career highlight?
I think that would be my first big release on Stil vor Talent at the beginning of this year. It opened up a lot of new doors for me and I really got some positive feedback on it. I’m very happy to announce that I also have a second EP on Stil vor Talent coming up in June!
When you were young, what mixes did you have on repeat?
I listened to a lot of tracks and mixes in the past but I think there is one mix that jumps out of the rest because this was a mix that I had on repeat a lot when I just started my career. It is the live recording of Oliver Koletzki at Watergate in 2014.
What are you most looking forward to through the rest of 2017?
I’m looking forward in further developing my own sound. I want to create a more underground feel in reflection to the music I made before but still with my own touch. Every time that I’m in the studio or that I’m playing a show I learn a lot of new stuff that helps me evolve my music. Of course I’m also looking forward to all the festivals this summer and the releases that are coming up!
