As a DC10 resident, can you walk us through a typical Luca Cazal set? Do you have any specific instances that stand out to you while playing DC10 (that you’re willing/able to share, of course)?
As a resident for Paradise I have to play different types of sets, depending on the set time I’m given and on whether I’m playing in the main room or on the terrace. That’s crucial because I think that the two different rooms in DC10 have each their own particular atmosphere and sound systems that suit different music. So if I’m playing in the main room my set would definitely be deeper and more eclectic. Whilst if I play on the terrace it would be more focused on the rhythmical aspect and the pace would be faster. There are a lot of other differences but that’s a long conversation!
I have two standout moments in DC10, the first one was the set at my birthday during the first season in the main room. It was a later set and DJ Harvey was also on the line up. All my friends were there and the place was heaving. The second was this last season playing a live analogue set on the terrace with Brigante. It was our first live show and because of the set up there were many things that could have gone wrong but everything went really smoothly, and the whole room was going off 🙂
I also see you performed at Burning Man in 2012, what was that experience like? As a NYC native (now in Amsterdam), Robot Heart is consistently a not-to-be missed event when in Brooklyn, but I have never been to Burning Man so I am curious.
It was a pretty magical (and psychedelic!) experience as you may be able to imagine, we played as the bus was moving through the playa whilst everyone was following it and very rapidly increasing in numbers. We stopped and played the last hour out on the playa and the party that followed was pretty special.
On January 26th, you will have a new EP ‘Maya’ on your own label Double Drop; what was the process in putting ‘Maya’ together? What was your studio setup for the EP?
This release is actually coming out on See Double, which is a sub label of Double Drop and Maya will be the first release from it. It started off as a drum track/DJ tool, played entirely on the TR 909. I played this version for a couple of months and then I decided to add some vocals to it and started seeing it as more of a track at that point. So from there I added more elements and turned it into what it is now using the Roland SH-101, a Jomox X Base 09, the Juno 60, a live string sample and other bits and pieces.
Do you have a personal favourite production or remix that you have been responsible for?
It’s going to have to be one of the last things I’ve done as I always feel the most excited about the last thing I’ve made! It’s part of the new Infinity Ink album so you wouldn’t have heard it yet but it’s probably quite different from what most people would expect from us and I can’t wait to get it out there.
What are your professional goals in 2015?
My professional goals in 2015 are releasing the first Infinity Ink album, progressing with mine and Brigante’s labels, Double Drop and See Double, and to further my relationship with music.
Luca Cazal – Maya EP will be out on January 26th 2015 on See Double.
