There is just one party left for Amnesia in 2016, but given that it is the closing party, it is sure to be a show stopper after a season full of them. The club has had its fair share of troubles with the law this year, though, and in fact will have shorter opening hours because of it when the finale rolls around this Saturday, starting at 9pm. That will just mean the DJs go harder sooner, but no less fun will be had overall.
Playing will be the likes of Hannah Wants, Apollonia, Claptone, Grogon City, Mar-T – the long time resident and owner – plus D Edge’s Renato Ratier, Luigi Madonna and many more. One name sticks out more than most, though, and that is Ricardo Villalobos. The cult Chilean selector is set to play once more having already impressed with his sets for Sven Vath’s famous Cocoon night here, but as this will be his last chance to make a mark on Ibiza, expect him to pull out all the stops.
Ahead of the party we’ve had a think about five of the cuts that he might well drop going on previous form. Of course, trying to second guess the minimal master is a fool’s errand because part of what makes him so great is his knack for surprise: from forgotten trance tracks to the latest hand stamped 12” from Berlin, he can weave anything into an intoxicating soundtrack other DJs can only dream of. But still that didn’t stop us having fun passing the time until he steps up…
Ricardo Villalobos – Y.G.H.
Not as big as other cuts from this seminal Alcahofa LP such as Easy Lee or Dexter, YGH is the thinking man’s choice. Definitive of his hi fidelity, masterfully crafted final sounds, it is filled with diving sine waves and a light sprinkling of percussion that really suck you deep into his weird and wonderful world.
Mari Kvien Brunvoll – Everywhere You Go (Villalobos Celestial Voice Resurrection Mix)
A master of long form, slowly unfolding grooves, this remix by the Set Ei Es drum boss is one of his standouts. Over 15 minutes he skilfully orchestras an intricate electronic symphony that stimulates very synapse in your brain. To ear it somewhere like Amnesia would be special indeed.
Josh Wink – Higher State of Consciousness
Just when he has lulled you into a waif groove, Ricardo likes to shock you with a banger like this. Tough and trance-y, it is the sort of widely loved classic that will always get a massive reaction on the dance floor and take any party up a level.
Grandmaster Flash & Melle Mel – White Lines (Don’t Don’t Do It)
We all know Ricardo loves the gear—you only need to do an image search for him for proof of that. As such it’s always a laugh when he drops this early hip hop classic and totally ignores its advice.
Afro Elements – Lagos Jump (Raw Dub)
A raw, visceral house jam from Jerome Sydenham’s Ibadan label with an iconic sax line, this one is playful and sexy, spiritual and sure to bang in any set. Carefully teased and weaved in in the hands of Ricardo, though, and it’s a mind blower that will have people dripping for the delicious piano laced drop.
